The good: After spending the last 18 months bashing RM for the direction we have been going, I thought it would be nice to acknowledge the positives.RM spent a great deal of time speaking of the poor quality of depth on the roster and although it was only one preseason game, it appears to me he has rid the squad of undeserving and unqualified players. There are no Jerome Boyds hanging around waiting for the chance to be 20 yards away from the ball as it arrives at his assigned spot or player. We will still get beat at times, every team does, but i think we will see legitimate competion for the ball. That is refreshing.
That alone will make the games competitive. The back 7 appear vastly better.Lbers and secondary players are far better than weve seen in many, many years. We have quality players and impressive depth at many positions even if we lack any all pro candidates.
The WR position looks like it may have more potential than I gave it, we still lack a true #1 but with the addition of Bryce, we now have 4 guys that have a variety of mismatch potentails.Add Ausberry to the mix who it appears has all but been relegated to recieving exclusively, and the ability to put several of our running backs into the pattern and Im excited if not overwhelmed by what weve got going in this unit.
The quality of the unit coaches will pay dividends.Giving up huge return yards is simply unacceptable and Aprils special teams squad looks once again vastly improved to the units of the last few years.
The bad:The offensive line appears to not have the goods. After consecutive years of addition with Veldheer and Wis. We allowed satele to leave with the idea that Wis. would be the center of the future. Ive beat around the bush with this but Im done with that.He is not up to the task of being a dominant center. He needs to be moved back to guard, and Im fairly ceratin the braintrust wil refuse to accept that.Speaking of guards, ive seen enough of Breisel, and bergstrom doesnt appear to be the answer either. At some point The team should start Gurode, and move one of the RTs or nix into the left guard spot.
We are going to pay a price for allowing the O-line rebuild to sputter. The look good in Pass protection(good...not great) but arent opening any clean holes for any of the RBs.This is a problem.
The Ugly:The D line is a mess. The simms/walker tandem is going to punish Raiders fans. There is no natural pressure from Hunter and Houston, and the depth across both positions is weak
The hammer that got dropp on matt on the first possesion was the first of many to come.In fact despite the love Im sure will come in for TP, mcgloin may be the best option we have.
Look guys, TP has grown and I admire his continued effort, but he STILL winding up far too slowly,he still doesnt read the defense all together well and was pointed out on the ridiculously biased NFL network braodcast, defenses are straight vanilla right now and will be until the season starts, the struggles he has showing up yesterday is not a good indicator that he might be ready for the bright lights. All in all our QB situation is a huge cause for concern and Im all but certain we will draft another QB in 2014.
