PITTSBURGH - Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina has been prescribed rest to attack inflammation and swelling in his right knee. Manager Mike Matheny said that an MRI taken of the joint and a meeting with the team physician back in St. Louis did not show any need for surgery.
"The initial response from the doctor is that this is very similar to what they saw last time," Matheny said. "There's some swelling. They didn't see anything that would require any surgery or anything like that. So it was all positive.
"There's no question (it's a relief)," Matheny said. Asked if that means Molina could return in the minimum of 15 days, Matheny explained: "We don't have all of the information. They're trying to get an in-depth look. They're pretty pleased with what they saw. There's something going on in there. He's going to try and get it taken care of so that he can move and do the things that he need to do."
