Oh, this guy is going to cost the Wilpons a ton of money

Matt Harvey. He's the whole package. Talent, brains, looks, and apparently an appetite to go with them. He says he's not going to buy real estate until he gets that $200 million contract:

The 24-year-old said he “could buy a place now, but I’ve gotta wait for that $200 million contract.”

“If I’m going to buy an apartment, it has to be the best apartment in the city,” he said.
The good news is that he apparently loves New York. But who's his agent again, Scott Boros?

Where's Bernie Madoff when you need him?

His voice lacks the range of tonal color necessary to make it consistently interesting. Full time consideration of another endeavor might be in order."

I'll worry about this in 5 and half years.
And things can change on the dime in the world of baseball.

Sorry guys. Can't help but get visions of the second coming of Babe Ruth. And Harvey can hit too. We better lock him up or he might end up in the Bronx as their rightfielder in years to come.

Even if he is the best pitcher in the game in 5 years, is he worth $200M????

Haven't teams learned enough from those contracts.

Several teams have let Cliff Lee walk. A few years after letting the best player in the game walk, the Cardinals have one of the best records in the game.

I think baseball is rethinking these deals.

I'm starting to get worried about this guy. His success is starting to go to his head. The ESPN Body Issue, the magazine articles, the Jimmy Fallon bits.

I would only give a handful of guys a $200 million contract.

    Examples:
    1) Cano is 30 will be 31 in October. Close to 200M total but not a guaranteed contract after yr 6.
    - Terms: Sign him to a 6 year/156M contract...1st yr he gets 30M then, 28M, 27M, 25M, 24M, 22M...average of 26M...Opt out after year 5...with a club option in year 7 for 18M and year 8 for 16M...total 8yrs/190M.

    2) Manny Machado is 21...won't be 22 until next July.
    -Terms: Sign him to a 10year/210M contract...1st yr he gets 12M then, 12M, 15M, 20M, 22M, 24M, 24M, 26M, 27M, 28M...Opt out after year 7

    3) Mike Trout is 21...will be 22 in August.
    - Terms: Same as Machado

    4) Bryce Harper is 20...will be 21 in October.
    - Terms: Sign him to a 6 year/80M contract...1st yr he gets 8M then, 12M, 12M, 14M, 16M, 18M...opt out after year 5...with a club option in year 7 of 20M and year 8 of 24M...Total 8yrs/124M

    5) Clayton Kershaw is 25...will be 26 in March.
    - Terms: Sign him to a 5 year/150M contract...1st yr he gets 30M then, 30M, 30M, 30M, 30M...opt out after year 4...with a player option in year 6 of 28M and year 7 of 24M then a club option in year 8 of 20M and year 9 20M...Total 9yrs/242M

    6) Matt Harvey is 24...will be 25 in March.
    - Terms: Sign him to a 5 year/110M contract...1st yr he gets 17M then, 22M, 22M, 24M, 25M...with a player option in year 6 of 25M and year 7 of 27M then a club option in year 8 of 22M and year 9 20M...Total 9yrs/204M

The same guy that struck out 3 All-stars over 2 innings, one of which was Miguel Cabrera? I honestly don't see any reason to worry.

As long as Harvey stays away from coke and hard drugs, I'm not worried.

    Jorge Castillo @jorgeccastillo
Confirming MT @JeffPassan: I don't get big deal about Harvey's quotes. Wants cool clothes, hot women & big apartment. LIKE EVERY 24-YEAR-OLD

That is 110 M spent on a player under club control, an outrageous arbitration finding would be 10-20-30 M. 50 M less than your offering. Add that 50 M to the 94 M you scheduled for the yr.6-9 and make it 154 for 6 yrs, the last four club options. In essence you have extended our hold on Harvey with less risk as the extra 50 M is at club option

Well if the entire current Mets roster was on crack-cocaine I'd probably agree with that.

He has about 1 year of MLB experience...he hasn't proved himself over 3-4 years that Kershaw has. This also doesn't mean after the first 3 years of his contract he doesn't sign an extension.

Votto signed a 3 year 38M contract and then signed a 10yr/225M. So think of it as 3yrs/61M with a 6 year extension of 143M...9 years at 204M is more money per year than Votto (top 5 hitters in the MLB)

I think it's a pretty fair deal with only 1 yr of MLB experience.
