MLB set to expand instant replay for the 2014 season

Major League Baseball says it is moving ahead with plans to expand instant replay for umpires' calls next year.

MLB Executive Vice President Joe Torre says "we're pretty confident we'll have it in place for 2014."

Video review has been in place for home run calls since August 2008. Commissioner Bud Selig initially wanted to add trap plays and fair/foul calls down the lines for 2013, but change was put off while more radical options were examined.

Speaking to the Baseball Writers' Association of America on Tuesday, Torre said "we're still in the tweaking stages" and "we're not limiting ourselves."

An agreement would be needed with the unions and players and umpires.

The replay may include plays at the bases, and not just fair or foul, or trapped balls in outfiield

Just a reminder that the tv in your bathroom is most likely bigger then the TV they use to currently view disputed calls

Good news I just hope it really is instant we don't want to slow the game down any further. But I do support this.

With all this money baseball rakes in, they use that type of monitor to make important calls? That's dumb.

As many of us have mentioned before, get an ump upstairs who will be watching the game on TVs. Relay his judgement via phone and there you have it.

If Hawkeye can accurately track a serve at the US Open traveling 150 MPH down the center line to within a few CM then MLB can put someone with 20/20 vision and a HD TV in the damn box to get calls right.

    Awesome.

I still would prefer a booth umpire, but this is a good start and heading in the right direction.

    The sooner the better.

Maybe it will get some of these ******** umpires like Angel Hernandez, CB Bucknor, etc to do their jobs better as more of their calls will be under review.

    True.

Well maybe if he ****s up enough replay calls they'll fire him. I mean only an idiot can repeatedly miss a call in slow motion and maybe that exposes some of these umpires for not doing their jobs correctly.
