Lakers plan to play Chris Kaman and Pau Gasol together in the frontcourt
The Los Angeles Lakers were expected by some to bring in a team this summer which would be more suited to Mike D’Antoni‘s coaching style, yet due to having limited spending power thanks to the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, it was never really all that realistic.
After the signing of Chris Kaman, it appears that D’Antoni will run a similar system as last year, as opposed to playing a fast-paced type of game.
According to Kevin Ding, Pau Gasol will play alongside Kaman in the frontcourt:
Kaman, who has good mid-range shot, will play next to @paugasol as Lakers stick with slow-paced ball that worked late last season.
While Ding doesn’t reveal whether the Lakers will start Kaman alongside Pau, I’m betting they will. Seeing as the Lakers used the $3.2 million mini mid-level exception to sign Kaman, it appears that he’ll get a fair amount of playing time this year. The pairing of Pau and Kaman in the frontcourt should work on offense. Both bigs have a decent mid-range game and can post-up.
For example, if Pau’s in the low post, he has the ability to either score with either hand or hit the open man. Unlike with Dwight Howard, Kaman’s man won’t be able to help off on Pau unless he wants Gasol to find Kaman for an easy mid-range make.
Alternatively, Pau could be used in the high post – like he was with Dwight – and his passing ability should open up easy looks for Kaman inside with the high-low pass that Howard began to rely on more and more as the season progressed.
There may be questions on the defensive end, however, though if the pair can figure out how to use their length, they can maybe mask their lack of foot speed against the faster power forwards and centers in the league.
