Steve Clevenger walked out of Principal Park and headed to his Des Moines hotel room.
Where he ends up next is anyone’s guess.
The Iowa Cubs catcher/infielder was sent back to his room shortly before Monday’s game against the Memphis Redbirds while he awaited word on his future.
“I have no idea what’s going on,” Clevenger said before leaving. “I’m just waiting in the wings basically.”
Reports swirled online that the Cubs were close to finalizing a deal to send relief pitcher Carlos Marmol to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Could Clevenger be part of that deal?
“They haven’t said anything,” Clevenger said. “They just told me to go back to the hotel and wait on a call.”Des Moines RegisterClevenger most likely isn’t heading to Chicago to fill injured outfielder Ryan Sweeney’s roster spot. Instead, that could go to outfielder Dave Sappelt, who was not seen at Principal Park before Monday’s game.
Sappelt, who is on the 40-man roster, is hitting .269 with 12 doubles, three triples and two home runs.
