Yankees acquire (ex. Mets) OF Fernando Martinez (yes that guy)

    Yankees Acquire Fernando Martinez

The Yankees acquired Fernando Martinez from the Astros in exchange for minor league right-hander Charles Basford, according to Brian T. Smith of the Houston Chronicle (on Twitter).

Martinez, 24, has been less-than-stellar in 35 plate appearances for the Astros this season. In his five years for the Astros and Mets, the left-handed hitting outfielder has a .206/.269/.362 slash line. Martinez was once considered to be a promising farmhand in the Mets' system and was ranked as high as No. 22 across the minors by Baseball America prior to the 2007 season.

Basford, 22, has spend the last two seasons with the Yankees' New York-Penn League affiliate. In 19 relief appearances, the right-hander has a 5.13 ERA with 7.9 K/9 and 2.7 BB/9.

AAA lost 3 OFs in the span of two days with Zoilo go to the Bronx, and Mesa and Musty going on the DL. Its a depth move.

Never good when a guy develops arthritis in his knee at 22 years old. He was once a top 20 BA prospect though.

His swing is great for that ballpark but you know things are bad when you are picking up guys released by the Houston Astros.

    I see it like this.

    1) a fill in for AAA cuz 3 of our COFs are hurt down there. And Zolio has been called up

    2) they want take their shot at developing him. Look at Gomez .225/.276/.403 at 25.

Fernando is 24. If he sucks, no biggy, we release him.

Fernando Martinez.....you mean THE Fernando Martinez, the Met's number one untouchable prospect? Cashman is a genius!

True but Carlos Gomez was always looked at as a possible late bloomer. His skillset was unique and power is always the last tool to develop. The Mets signed him when he was 17 and he was very raw.

F-Mart was kind of Minaya's pride and joy and he was a labeled a possible 5 tool player but it just never materialized. I remember when the Mets first signed him, he was compared to Carlos Beltran lol.

Exactly, and F-Mart always had power. His problem was health and consistancy.

Oh I remember. My gf is a Mets fan, her brother and father diehards, so I kept taps on the Mets. I even heard some compare F-Mart's hitting to Ted Williams which made me I'll say at 24 he has potential to still grow. I mean Ike Davis is 2 yrs. older than him, he's very lucky to be 24 imo. F-Mart still has possibilities, will it happen while in our system? who knows but the tools are there, if it's a bust, hey we traded nothing. But if he turns out, then Cashman gets executive of the year talks. No biggie.
