NBA Finals Ratings: Series Earns Lowest Game 3 Overnight Since 2007

    http://www.sportsmediawatch.com/2013...ht-since-2007/

Overnight ratings for Game 3 of the NBA Finals were the lowest since the last time the Spurs played in the event.

Game 3 of the Heat/Spurs NBA Finals drew a 10.0 overnight rating on ABC Tuesday night, down 4% from Thunder/Heat Game 3 last year (10.4), and down 10% from Heat/Mavericks Game 3 in 2011 (11.1).

The 10.0 overnight is the lowest for Game 3 of the NBA Finals since Spurs/Cavaliers in 2007 (7.8), and is the lowest for any NBA Finals game since Lakers/Magic Game 5 in 2009 (9.4).

Of course, it should be pointed out that Tuesday’s overnight is much closer to the previous years than to the record-low levels of 2007. Lakers/Magic Game 3 in 2009, for example, was only slightly higher at a 10.1 overnight.

Tuesday’s overnight still ranks as the highest for a Game 3 involving the Spurs since Spurs/Knicks in 1999 (12.4).

    Game 3 drew a 28.4 rating in Miami-Ft. Lauderdale, down 4% from Thunder/Heat last year (29.6), and down 12% from Heat/Mavericks in 2011 (32.3).

In San Antonio, the game drew a series-high 37.5 — still down 13% from Spurs/Cavaliers Game 3 in 2007 (43.3). Game 3 ratings for Spurs/Pistons in 2005 were not available.

Interesting. I find this to be one of the best played and most compelling final in recent years.

10.4 to 10.0 is less than a .04% drop, not a 4% drop. Someone needs to check their math.

That small of a drop could even mean total viewers are up, but just not as much as the number of television households (I have no idea how often they re-estimate that).

You are right. SOMEONE does need to check their math.

PS - it isn't the OP

Don't worry. Nobody will remember by tomorrow. Not even me.

That's because you have 2 medium markets playing and the fans in the large market are no bothering to watch. Last year, we also had 2 medium teams but more people were watching because everyone wanted to see if Lebron was going to fail. But since he passed the test, there's nothing for those fans to look forward to.

It doesn't say whether the blowout nature of the game affected the ratings – I personally tuned out two-thirds of the way through the third quarter, confident in what the outcome would be.
It also doesn't address how more people watch the game online streaming, which wouldn't add to the ratings.
It has been a very exciting series with an almost unparalleled storyline, but it was low-key – just how the Spurs like it.

This is a big one. Now a days a lot of people are streaming games. I think to really tell how much of an audience you have is to mix TV rating with social media. Twitter is blowing up when the games are on.

The downtick in ratings is very minor, esp. when you factor in the fact that the heat lost by 37. If the game had been closer, game 3 ratings would likely have exceeded last year's game 3, which suggests that interest in this year's finals is strong; at least as strong as last year's finals.

The problem with that is that this analysis is all based on money-making ventures for the NBA and TV stations. Maybe once the prices become more reasonable, more people will be willing to pay some money to watch the games in better quality.
