Alright, so we all want to revolt right now, but let's step back for a moment and think about this...
Maurice Cheeks is a Larry Brown protégé, and yes we all admit Cheeks is a great assistant, but still he helped the 76ers get to the Finals. His first head coaching gig, he took the Blazers to two straight playoffs. Both times subsequently knocked out in the first round, but looking back how good were those teams? Especially when you consider the early millennial teams in the Western Conference. His 76ers stint involved Iverson. Enough said. Once you kick off Iverson and Webber, the "stars," he took the Iguodala led 76ers to the playoffs. He then had a rough start to the next season and was fired. Though he does have a losing record, he still makes the playoffs. Right now that would be a major improvement.
Cheeks does tend to lose players with attitudes, or character issues. However, from what I gather about our roster, we don't put up with much of that. Or, we are lucky that our top players are head-down and grind it out type of guys. Cheeks knows how to use players to win, he just needs the players that will listen. Notice in the season after getting rid of Iverson, and with Iguodala as the teams true star, the 76ers ranked 8th in defense.
I am not saying that I loved this signing. At the same time, Cheeks is the type of coach that can give this team an identity and get it in the playoffs. For where we are at, I think it was a great choice. After a few years, I think we will be a better franchise because we had Maurice Cheeks as our head coach...even if it means that a new GM is announcing his firing.
