So Colby is making starts now at Round Rock but apparently his velocity is topping out at 87 mph. He's never been a heater guy, but he is normally 90-91 with his fastball with good movement. Since he uses that pitch to set up his slider, which is his "out" pitch. The idea is the two pitches look exactly the same 2/3rds of the way to the plate, until the slider dips down and away to righties. Because of the difference in velocity (81 vs 91) and the movement, a well thrown slider is devastating. But, with his FB being slower, there's less deception between the two pitches. If you guess the location, you can make serious contact because you won't be in front of the pitch. If Colby doesn't get his velocity back, he could very well be done as an MLB pitcher I think.
