Still take Gray over Bryant. Appel over Gray. We need pitching. Generally, shouldn't draft on need but this is a situation where we should.

Oregton State opened with a triple and an RBI groundout against Appel, but he picked up two K's on his fastball. Threw his fastball in this inning more than he did last week in the first against Arizona St (didn't chart this week but last week it was a 1:1 between fastball and offspeed in the first).

57th ranked draft prospect (BA), HS SS Riley Unroe, is apparently looking for a million+ with a strong commitment to USC. He's one of the better HS bats in the draft and probably going to go higher than 57 on draft day.

    Here's PG on him:

Riley Unroe is a 2013 SS/OF/RHP with a 6-0 180 lb. frame from Mesa, AZ who attends Desert Ridge HS. Tightly wound athletic build, good present strength. 6.40 runner, explosive first step quickness, balanced sound footwork at shortstop, very good arm strength, soft hands, has all the tools to be a standout defender, also plays outfield, obvious centerfield tools. Switch-hitter, much better swing at present from the left side, good bat speed, short and crisp to the ball, hard pull contact, good balance. Late foot and hand hitch right side, longer swing , shows his raw strength and flashed power right handed so tools are there to develop. Plays hard and performs. Good student.
    PG Grade 10.0
I'm thinking ~9.5 between him and Appel might be a good route to go with this draft and pickup some Conways/Amlungs with the remaining 2.3 million or w/e it is. Picking so high should be about impact talent and the top pitcher + a switch hitting SS with power seems like a good deal.

Watching him throw, if Appel is the pick, I dont think it will take long for him to be with the Cubs.

The camera angle for the Oklahoma game is absolutely brutal. It's set up in left-center field, looking at the pitcher through the 5.5 hole. We wouldn't have learned much from Gray's start other than velocity readings.

$9.5 would be almost the Cubs entire draft budget. I really doubt if the Cubs get Appel they would have to go overslot to sign him. If he wants over $6 million it is going to have to come from the Rockies, Astros or Cubs. If the Astros pass I really doubt he wants to earn a free agent contract pitching in Coors field.

For those wishing for Stanton in the future, better cross your fingers, say your prayers, shine up your lucky pennies, and have some faith in Hoyer and Epstein to pluck some impact talent out of this draft. This draft, last year's draft, and Javier Baez turning into a stud prospect are gonna be our ticket to any trade involving the big man. Give me Appel and then give me some hidden gems. That's all I ask for.

Bryant homered again tonight; I think that's 26. He's batting leadoff now as well.

It should also be noted San Diego is playing Portland, who is not a good team.

Appel having a very mediocre night. 4 ER, 4 BB through 4.2.

Edit: 5 BBs through 4.2. Hasn't had the feel for his slider all night.

Also: Stanford's infield defense is horrific. Week in and week out they allow extra base runners.

Stanford had Appel at 96-97 tonight. He's 11 K's away from taking the lead in Stanford history..

I only saw last weeks, you mean the way he wears them classic style? Or is there something different. On the classic style, I like it. Need more players to sport the classic look.

My wish for draft night is Appel. . . . Gray. . Bryant. Gray might move up a bit after I catch him pitching today on TV. But he's gonna have to look hellah impressive to edge near Appel in my mind. Bryant would be a nice spec to have, if it comes with the caveat that we save a few mil to convice a couple young studs to skip college.

He wears the classic stirrups, but without the loop over his foot.
