    Spielman, Kluwe met Monday
On Saturday, the Vikings devoted a fifth-round pick to a punter. On Sunday, their current punter, Chris Kluwe, suggested that the move may be connected to his off-field support for causes like same-sex marriage.

Vikings G.M. Rick Spielman joined PFT Live on Tuesday to discuss a variety of topics, including Kluwe’s status and the possible connection between the drafting of a punter and the desire to avoid distractions.

“That has absolutely nothing to do with our decision,” Spielman said, “and I did meet with Chris Kluwe [Monday] and actually told him that our ownership had supported him on this. If he wants to go out and speak for what his beliefs are we’re all for the right of the First Amendment and free speech and I told Chris and emphasized that to Chris [Monday].

“My job is to make the best football decisions for our organization, and when we drafted Locke we knew there was going to be some controversy, is Kluwe going to be here, not be here. We’re basing this purely off of football only and I think Chris truly understands that especially after I did speak with him again [Monday] about that. What I also told Chris was we’ll go through [a rookie minicamp] this weekend to kind of see where we’re at and then I’ll meet with him on Monday and we’ll go forward from there.”

That last part suggests that, if the Vikings believe based on the upcoming rookie minicamp that Locke can get the job done, the Vikings possibly will accelerate the timetable for making a decision as to Kluwe’s future. If the final decision won’t be made until after Kluwe and Locke have a chance to compete in training camp and the preseason, there’s no reason for Spielman and Kluwe to reconvene on Monday.

Still, Spielman was adamant that, if Kluwe goes, it will have nothing to do with his support for same-sex marriage or his expression of concern that he could be cut because of it.

“That’s Chris’s right and his prerogative but I can truly tell you from Leslie Frazier, from myself, from our ownership, that has absolutely, 100 percent, nothing to do with the decision that we are going to make,” Spielman said. “I mean we are looking at football decisions and we’re also looking at [the fact that] we’ve got one more year in the Metrodome, potentially the next two years are going to be, we’re going to be playing outdoors. So everything that we’re basing whether its Chris Kluwe or any of our players, we’re basing them purely off of what is the best 53-man roster we can put on the field on opening day.”

It doesn’t sound good for Kluwe. Then again, it didn’t sound good for Kluwe the moment the Vikings used a fifth-round pick on a punter. Just like it didn’t look good last year for Ryan Longwell the moment the Vikings used a sixth-round pick on a kicker.

Lonwell was cut the Monday after the 2012 post-draft rookie minicamp concluded. It looks like the same thing will be happening to Kluwe, unless Locke tears an ACL this weekend or launches a variety of shanks and/or ducks and/or line drives.

Ok so I'm not exactly sure of the details but it seems that our team did not actually sign Robbie Rouse. I'm not sure if it was because he failed a physical or what but he's not on our roster. While I think that he could have some hope as a change of pace guy behind AP and Toby the running back we really did sign is probably a better fit for the team, Bradley Randle from UNLV who can compete as a return specialist.

I really like what Marcus Sherels brings to the position however we certainly should be giving him competition.

Erin Henderson - LB - Vikings

Erin Henderson has bulked up in anticipation of his move to middle linebacker.

    -rotoworld

I really like the sound of this. If he can be a mirror of his brother at MLB or even 75% that will be huge for our D. He's always played solid OLB, but struggled in coverage. Moving him middle for 2 downs and switching to nickel for passing downs with Hodges will be key to our defense.

If he has bulked up I am not worried about him playing in the middle. He is very strong in the run game but needs work in pass coverage. But if you look at our defense we try to stop the run first so I think it will end up working out for Erin. I think talent wise we put better players on the field with the combination of Greenway, Henderson, and Hodges/Mitchell.

Yup Erin Henderson has balked up, coaches told him he will open camp as the Mike, leaving Hodges with a big opportunity to start at weak side LB.

Also Greg Childs has been running for a couple months now and has been cutting/doing receiver drills. Still not 100%, though.

Yeah, I'd be really interested to know how fast he is now. I still think that if he focuses on becoming a possession WR we could have something there.

According to Childs his doctor performed the surgery a little different this time to try and make the tendon tighter and strong so we'll see if that makes any difference. Still long odds he contributes next year but I'll be rooting for him.

Christian Ponder - QB - Vikings
Christian Ponder revealed that he underwent an MRI on his right elbow several weeks after the season when his triceps bruise "flared up" again.
Ponder says he's fine now, but it's a reminder for a player who's struggled with throwing-arm injuries since Florida State. Ponder was unable to play in the Wild Card round of the playoffs due to a right triceps bruise that essentially "shut down" his entire arm. He had multiple shoulder surgeries in college.

Cordarrelle Patterson - WR - Vikings
The Rams reportedly had "little interest" in Cordarrelle Patterson.
The Rams went into the draft holding the Nos. 16 and 22 overall picks. But instead of sitting tight and waiting for Patterson, they jumped up to No. 8 and grabbed Tavon Austin. Per beat writer Jim Thomas, the Rams thought Patterson was "too raw" and "had some character concerns." The Vikings are expected to ease their rookie in slowly as a backup to Jerome Simpson.

IMO it won't take long for Patterson to assert himself into the starting lineup. The Vikes will take it slow which is good so I'll say by week 4 he'll be starting even though I think he'll be very good in camp. I'm serious but I think he'll have a Julio Jones type of impact. I just have that feeling (so he'll probably end up tanking, lol).

Greg Childs - WR - Vikings
Vikings WR Greg Childs (torn patellar tendons) has resumed sprinting and cutting.
"All the necessary things I need to be doing, I'm doing now," Childs said. "I still do my cuts and my runs full speed. There is no change in the way I run or the way I play. My routes are still the same." Despite the progress, Childs admits he's not close to 100 percent. The Vikings are operating under the assumption Childs "may never play a meaningful down in the NFL." So should fantasy owners.
    rotoworld

This is still great progress for a guy less than 1 year removed from this injury. I suspect he's also going to have some conditioning ahead of him and worst case some atrophy.

No timetable on Greg Childs’ recovery from two torn patellar tendons
Vikings wide receiver Greg Childs‘ first training camp as a professional had barely started when it and his rookie season came to a sudden halt.

Childs tore the patellar tendons in both knees early last August, an injury that raised the possibility that his career would come to a halt as well. Gary Baxter and Wendell Davis never played in another NFL game after suffering the dual knee injuries and Dan Wierderer of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported earlier this month that the Vikings are proceeding as if Childs “may never play a meaningful down.”

Childs, who tore the same tendon in his right knee while in college, isn’t throwing in the towel, though. He’s been working out at the team’s headquarters and progressed to doing some cutting and sprinting among other drills. The 2012 fourth-round pick is not 100 percent healthy, though, and isn’t making any predictions about his fitness for the start of training camp this summer.

“We’re just going to see how I feel when that time comes. I’m not going to put a time limit on it. I ain’t going to put no date and say I’m going to be back midseason or the first of the season,” Childs said, via Tom Pelissero of 1500ESPN.com. “There’s no sense coming back 80, 90 percent. That’s not going to really help the team out. That’s what we’re trying to do right now — just get me back on the field so I can really help the team.”

The long view is the only one for Childs right now, so the fewer arbitrary deadlines the better for a comeback effort that would beat some pretty long odds.

It took Childs around 18 months to feel like himself again last time. I would imagine it would take even longer having torn both this time around. It's great that he feels there is "no change in the way I run or the way I play" but I still think the very earliest we see him back on the field is next season. I expect him to start on the PUP list and then end up sitting out all season.
