Allen believes in patience and building a foundation for lasting success

It may not be the message the fan base wants to hear after not having enjoyed a winning season since 2002, but coach Dennis Allen believes in patience and building a foundation for lasting success.

Talking to reporters at the NFL owner’s meetings in Arizona, Allen lauded the business models of teams such as New England, Atlanta and Baltimore.

“We’re really not into microwave economics, where you’re trying to get everything done right now, you’re trying to get out and make a big splash and you say, `Well, we won March,’ ‘’ Allen said. “We want to win November, December and January. That’s what we want this team to do (eventually).

Talking about the importance of building through the draft, Allen said, “If you want to look at the teams that have been able to draft well, they’re teams that, they’re in this year, they’re in next year, they’re in the year after that and the year after.

“That’s what we want to be . . . we don’t want to be a flash in the pan, where you show up for a year, and here we are, a playoff contender, and the next year you don’t hear from us. We want to build a team that’s going to compete year-in and year-out.’’

Regarding Carson Palmer and his $13 million salary, Allen declined to address the quarterback’s contractual issues, stressing that Palmer is currently the Raiders No. 1 quarterback but that every position would include competition.

An Allen Q&A from today’s press session at the owner’s meetings can be seen at this link on Raiders.com.

Agreed. Build through the draft and use FA as a supplement. It is going to take time to get out of cap hell and make up for years of no/blown 1st round picks. Finally we have a better plan in place than "Let's sign Javon Walker!" or "Let's blow our #1 picks on 30+ year old players!"

I've seen enough losses bro that a few more won't hurt

I was very impressed with how the defense ended the aeason and believe with some turnover he will get our defense into the top 10 by the end of 2014.

The addition of Sporano will have a huge impact as well, more then Olsen IMO. He knows how I build a mean OL an we are alot better there then people give us credit for.

    Hahaha, true enough.

I agree with Allen's attitude, though. RM / DA are trying to utilize the cap conscious, budget-minded attitude that has kept Pittsburgh relevant for years - strong running game, strong defense and a steady approach to keeping the roster talent strong through the draft.

I can't say for certain that this front office will get the job done; I can say, however, that they've got the right idea on how to build a team.

One thing is for sure, I am glad that with all the out-of-whack signings that have taken place, we are involved in "zero"......that's a refreshing sign of change right there.......
After we resigned Charles Woodson, I am happier than the Pillbury Doughboy on his way to a baking convention!!!!!

As long as the losses are in a planned process for developing into an NFL team with a solid foundation!!

    That's beautiful man!!

As we expect to loose this season, we'll probably go 9-7 and get in. expectations are low, but we are getting solid team players in the building. most of the personnel changes will be on D, it's conceivable that the O gels quick and is able to score. this is kinda like that spoof dating skit "lower expectations". (cue harps)

Allen: Burris not necessarily out of a starting job

Raiders coach Dennis Allen spoke to the media at the coaches breakfast at NFL Owners’ meetings in Arizona Tuesday morning. He didn’t give any Carson Palmer updates — “I’m not going to comment on anything regarding a contract” — and said the three free agent linebackers signed doesn’t mean Miles Burris hits the bench.

“We just went out and signed three new linebackers, but we have Miles Burris, who we think is a starting-caliber linebacker,” Allen said. “So, now we feel like we have four starting-caliber linebackers. That, one, makes us better from a competition standpoint; all of those guys are going to compete for an opportunity to play; and it makes us better from a depth standpoint, and it makes us better from a standpoint of, if we’re only counting on three linebackers all the time, somebody has to have a greater role on special teams. The more competition there is, the better we’re going to be.”

Allen said the Raiders are adding the right kind of players, guys that fit general manager Reggie McKenzie’s and Allen’s vision:

“Last year was a mad dash,” Allen said. “This year is really actually calm, as far as what’s going on in the organization, what’s going on with the coaches, the personnel. We have a real plan, a real vision for what we want to do with this thing. As far as the offseason, I think the coach additions to our staff were outstanding. I think some of the personnel moves, we didn’t necessarily want to lose some of those.

“We would’ve loved to have had all four of those guys back (Philip Wheeler, Desmond Bryant, Brandon Myers and Matt Shaughnessy). We also felt we made some really good additions to our team, from a personnel standpoint. Those guys we added we feel can help us, not just from a football standpoint but from a culture, and a locker-room standpoint. They’re really the right type of guys that we’re looking for.”

And not making excuses, but … Allen said the salary-cap problems were really that bad, and contributed to the team’s 4-12 record after back-to-back 8-8 finishes.

“To be totally frank with you, I don’t know that Reggie or myself knew exactly where it was,” Allen said. “We knew there was a lot of work to do in that regard, but I think as you go through and you really start crunching the numbers, you’ve got to see where you’re at, what you have to do. A lot of teams face those cap decisions, but the volume of decisions (keeping and releasing players) that we went through last year I think were unusual compared to other teams.”

Finally !!1 read this last night and wanted tto comment on it this morning. We need to build this team right via Draft and some FA moves but we need to give it at least one more year before we're even close to thinking playoffs.
