Corey Webster to accept pay cut to stay with Giants (7.25 million down to 4 million)

Corey Webster will earn less money next season, but he'll remain a member of the New York Giants.

NFL Network's Kimberly Jones reports the team's best cornerback will take a sizeable pay cut to stay in New York, according to a source familiar with negotiations. Webster's salary will be slashed from $7.25 million to $4 million.

It's not a surprise. Webster turns 31 this month and was in the final year of the six-year, $44.02 million contract he signed in 2008. There's no way the Giants were about to pay that kind of money to a player in decline.

Pro Football Focus notes that opposing signal-callers sported a 106.6 passer rating when throwing in Webster's direction in 2012. He was taken to town too often by receivers, but has been a fixture in New York's secondary since taking over the starting role in 2008. He'll stick around for at least one more campaign.

So he just took the cut? Did they threaten to release him? Either way that is some much needed cap space

Baas retructured too, his number went down 2 mil. So in a day we've added 5.5 mil. And somebody told me in a different thread that these guys wouldn't restructure....win for me

Are you sure they said they wouldn't restrucure? What I read is that some said restructuring isn't always the best option as it increases your cap-numbers for the following years. So what happened with Baas's contract then? And Webster just took a pay-cut without restructuring or extending his contract? That's awesome!

Good job Giants and bump You C Web haters. Glad he is around. Me and the Giants organization still know and see that Corey Webster is are #1 CB. And that's that!

Whoo hoo free up space for Cruz Kenny or a OL?? Free agent pickup? Thank god Baas was ungodly overpaid. He sucks and I don't like him IMO. Diego needs to get cut!! Honestly. I dislike him after the 1st Superbowl win under Eli

Webster, #1 DB? Did you watch the games last season?

I'm glad they both took cuts, both were getting overpaid and didn't merit their price on the cap. Now Diehl has to step up and meet the same fate

Pretty sure this isn't a restructure, its a paycut. They definitely threatened to release him lol, had to. Webster was one of the few smart athletes in this situation swallowed his pride realizing 4m > 0m plus the whole moving and adapting thing.

He took a pay-cut because he himself and the Giants organisation both knew he isn't our #1 anymore... If he was that great they wouldn't have offered him a cut now would they and he wouldn't have taken it either...

Estimated at $10 mil under the cap right now. So I'd expect a Cruz deal (and/or Nicks) pretty soon. Although they may wait to see if someone else tries to offer him on the tender and then match whatever is put out there.

I think this is also a good sign that they are gonna make a FA move at DT (Jenkins) and/or LB. Also a chance for Bennett to return now.

    Not confident that Boothe returns.

Point being, lots more room to work with now considering Beatty is already locked up.

Yup. His agent knows he's coming off a bad season and won't get much on the market now, so this season he can make $4m and redeem himself for a FA value next year.

You continue to prove you have no idea what restructuring means or how contracts work.

Lewis won't be cheap. Expect the Browns maybe even the Ravens to overpay for him. That guy that interest me is Bradley Fletcher from the Rams

I don't see a Cruz deal coming soon. Just the 3 tenders are going to be close to 7 million and we have 9 free. Then 5 for rookies.
