Aaron Rodgers Contract Extension to set new benchmark for several years

A league source with knowledge of the situation told PFT the Packers will extend Aaron Rodgers' contract "soon," and that it will "set a new benchmark that will stand for several years."
"It is his time," the source said. The NFL's best quarterback is signed through 2014, but the six-year, $65 million deal he inked in October 2008 is severely outdated. The former league and Super Bowl MVP is going to blow away Joe Flacco's $52 million guaranteed when he re-ups. CBS Sports reported Tuesday Rodgers has no plans to hold out this summer if he doesn't get a new deal.

Saw this on rotoworld and my mouth instantly dropped. A benchmark for several years sound extremely scary for our cap situation.

Yeah it sucks cap wise but what can ya do about it? He deserves to be the highest paid player in the league plain and simple. I trust TT will figure out a way to keep us competitive after Rodgers' new contract.

I have a feeling this is just someones opinion. Rodgers doesn't seem like the type that would want to put us in jeopardy cap wise. He does want to get paid though.

I've been saying for quite some time Rodgers will get a contract around 20 mil. That was before Flacco though. Now he apparently deserves well over that mark. I wouldn't be surprised to see him take less but I am in no way expecting it. I can't say I'd do it if I were him so how could I expect him to do it. I also just look at all the other elite QB's. Every single one of them are taking as much money as possible.

He's definitely worth it. He's also a winner, so down the road if taking a pay cut would help the team or we wanna bring someone great in, I could see him doing that..based on his character. We are very lucky to have him as our teams quarterback. Do whatever it takes to make him happy lmao.

I think it'll be around 25 million per year.

I have a feeling that Aaron's contract won't exceed Flacco's by very much at all. He want's to win and get paid so anything much more then 20 mill a year could/would jeopardize surrounding Rodgers with championship caliber talent. I feel like records and the title of "greatest ever" is Aaron's goal not highest paid qb ever. Those kind of accomplishments can only be achieved with a good supporting cast (just ask LBJ).

He will trump Flacco in the salary department but it's because of how much respect the franchise gives him. Flacco pretty much had to gamble his salary by turning down an offer last year and the raven franchise didn't have a choice because of that efficient run he had in the post season. No one and I mean no one debates that flacco is even in the top 3 at his position but Aaron's name is interchangeable in the number 1 or 2 spot. To me Flacco would be worth 10-15 mill a year and rodgers is worth 20. It just sucks that flacco is so wildly overpaid which forces inflated contracts for the guys who really deserve the 20 mill a year.

Seriously look at Flaco's contract. It's so backloaded, I'd be shocked if he actually played it out for that.

Even if they do cut him in 2017 or whatever they are still pretty screwed. I don't like backloaded contracts. It really messes up your team long term

Contracts, big and small, are routinely renegotiated with pro-rated bonuses, years added, etc. to help team's salary caps while still benefiting the player (in most cases). I read somewhere Flacco and his agent already know they will redo the deal after 3 years. That being said, I am still somewhat concerned that the short term cap number MAY effect our ability to re-sign the likes of Clay and BJ for what their market value is likely to be. At the same time, I also think Aaron's new deal needs to get done sooner rather than later, and should be for a considerable amount more than Joe's.

To be honest, I don't really follow the sentiment that he's going to really do the team a ton of favors. I mean the guy is out to make money. He may give us a slight discount, but nothing that will make a huge difference in my mind. Sure he wants to win, but he's also arrogant. I don't mean that in a bad way either, every great player is incredibly arrogant and you sort of have to be. He will want to be the highest paid player in the league, and I think he'll want a number that makes sure someone doesn't leapfrog him like he will Flacco. He and his agent understand as much as anyone how much more valuable he is than Flacco. Plus he'll have the pressure put on him by the players association too so the owners don't have the leverage of well Rodgers only makes this much. He'll get paid a big amount of money, probably a decent amount over Flacco.

Basically we have to be smart about things, and TT has already shown to do a decent job of being smart. I look at the old Colts as the example. Basically, they spent all their money on Peyton, Freeney, Mathis, Wayne and Harrison. We will spend our money on our Peyton and Freener (Rodgers and Matthews) but I think we'll let our Mathis, Wayne and Harrison walk more often than other teams, and make sure we have capable young guys waiting in the wings. I mean, its exactly what he are doing with Jennings. We drafted Cobb at the perfect point that he's now ready to basically seamlessly fill in for Jennings at a much smaller deal, while Jennings is out looking for his Reggie Wayne deal. I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing happens to Tramon. When he gets too expensive and we're tight up against the cap, he'll walk and be replaced by the cheaper Shields, Hayward and House. We just have to keep drafting with an eye on the future like we have, so that when one overpriced, good but not great veteran leaves, we'll have a more reasonably priced, yet somewhat experienced young player waiting in the wings.

Well he definitely deserves to be the highest paid player. TT will get it done and still keep us cap friendly.

Back in 2001 Brett Favre signed a Lifetime contract that was around 10 years and just over 100 million.
has anyone seen a deal like that before? Could that be what is in store for Arodg? is it still allowed? lol
