Tigers taking a hard look at Marmol..... or not.

Bruce Levine of ESPN Chicago reports that the Tigers are "taking a hard look" at the Cubs' Carlos Marmol.
Levine adds that several other teams have expressed trade interest and that Marmol "will most likely be pitching for another team before Opening Day." The 30-year-old right-hander posted a 3.42 ERA and 72/45 K/BB ratio across 55 1/3 innings last season and is owed a $9.8 million salary in 2013. If he leaves, newcomer Kyuji Fujikawa would probably take over as the Cubs' closer.

Hopefully we can get something good.
I hope the "Appel" doesn't fall far from OUR tree.

If it happens I say we end up with 2 top 20 prospects and eat some of the cash. I like two of the lefties Ehlers and Crosby to be in the deal.

This would be perfect. He's fighting for the number 5 spot in their rotation, so he's clearly expendable. He's young, cheap, and has a very live arm.

I would love Porcello you give that guy the potential infield defense that we'll have he would be a very solid #3 type maybe even better. I think he could eventually be a Brandon Webb in the National League. I think it would probably take more then Marmol though but if he's fighting for a 5th spot I'd put in Barney and want expect a prospect in return.

Getting rid of Barney would open up a spot for Watkins and down the road Baez.

I said earlier this offseason that a deal involving Porcello for Marmol and Travis Wood is a great framework. Especially now that we will be without Garza and Baker to open the season.

I can't imagine the Tigers being interested in Travis Wood though. If Porcello can't crack their rotation then Travis Wood has no chance. I just hope they still have a big interest in Barney.

Kind of is actually. Outside of his defense he's not very good. Not a power hitter doesn't really get on base but for the Tigers that is ok because they need defense. I'd easily throw in Barney to get Porcello I'd like to think we could a spec back but given Marmols Salary and Barneys average ness I wouldn't be too upset if it was a straight up trade.

I consider Barney+Marmol for Porcello a steal. It's the same reason as the Marshall deal. Even though Sean Marshall is really good, we're getting a young starter with big upside. Even if Porcello never develops. It's still a trade you have to take.

Yep the only thing that would suck is the loss of the defense at 2B because great defense is what is going to make Porcello a very good pitcher. I'm not really sure about Watkins or any of our other second base defense in the minors.

umm What? Porcello is 24 years old and already MLB ready. I like prospects as much as the next guy but they're not going to give up Castellanos. So I'll take the MLB ready guy over a prospect that isn't one of their top guys.

    Is 24 not young enough?
