    Which is Worse?

Franchise tag in the NFL or MLB's rookie contract/control.

Very simple question. If you are an athlete, which would you hate more?

The franchise tag is guaranteed money though and you get paid in accordance with the top players at your position.

Rookie control and service time is a killer for a guy like Mike Trout because his play will vastly exceed his market value for quite some time.

I mean the guy isn't even arbitration eligible till 2015.

Why this is an issue with Trout too is because of where he was drafted.

He didn't get Bryce Harper money or Strasburg money.

When he signed in 2009 he only got 1.2 million bucks, and his salary this year is only 510K..

Seems disproportionate given he hadthe best rookie season of all time.

it balances out. at the end of his career, he will very likely be playing worse than he is being paid. thats the nature of guaranteed contracts

It doesn't balance out because how many rookies have the impact Trout had last year or for that matter have the capability to perform at the level until they see their first FA contract?

Trout isn't a FA till 2018, at least with the franchise tag these guys get paid in relation to how much players of similar production get paid.

Trout has to get paid basically the minimum until he qualifies for arbitration in 2015 and even as he goes through multiple arbitration years he won't see the payday he deserves.

    You are missing my point..

My point was its looks disproportionate now because of all the guaranteed money Harper and Strasburg got.

And he is on that level talent wise..

and then he will get the pay day. and if he continues at that pace, he will get a contract at some point paying him prime money past his prime. it balances out. if the team cant make him take a pay cut them, they have no reason to give him that money now

It doesn't change the fact that he is on that talent level and also underpaid.

The original question was what would you hate more as a professional athlete?

Franchise tag guarantees a player market value for at least that one year signed, rookie and service time does not.

If we are comparing those things, i am taking the franchise tag every time.

right, but they aren't signing him now. they signed him in 2009 when they didn't know that. my point is that has nothing to do with the draft.
