Justin Schultz: I have not seen him play. How good is he?

Justin Schultz: I have not seen him play. How good is he?

I remember he was a highly sought after free agent. Seeing as he never played a game in the NHL I wondered how he would do. He had great numbers in college. I just saw he put up huge numbers in the AHL for a rookie. Now I see he has 5 goals-13 points in his first 20 NHL games. Is he as good as his stats look? How is he defensively? I saw that he does not hit much 7 hits in 20 games. What current or former NHL player would he compare to?

I see some Niedermayer in Schultz's game. He has work to do defensively but his offensive game is off the charts. His IQ is there as well, really doesn't play like a rookie.

Very fluid skater. Very smart decision maker.

Love his philosophy from the blueline. He very rarely takes a slapshot...puts a low, hard snapshot or wristshot on net. Very smart.

Oilers definitely lucked out in a big way when he hit the market and they got themselves a gem.

Top pairing dman. He's the real deal. The Oilers lucked out. Smooth player, very smart. I'd put him well above his former team-mate Jake Gardiner which is pretty high praise IMO. Pisses me off that a team with several first overall picks essentially got another top 5 pick for nothing.

I'm actually surprised he is doing so well offensively so fast. I was shocked when I saw his rookie AHL numbers. I like defensemen to have some physicality as well though so when I do finally get to see him play I will be looking for that aspect in his game.

I still really wish he would have chose the Rangers

I agree. The Rangers should be every players first choice in my mind.

This is gonna sound crazy but if his defensive game can improve dramatically, which I think it can, we are looking at a Lidstrom type player. Very smooth, not flashy but very efficient. Not a high effort guy, in a good way, everything seems to come easy to him.

IF his defense goes from like average to best in the league he can be a Lidstrom type player, sure. Pretty huge if though.

Yes Lidstrom was one of the best defensman ever but I would not say he was the best defensive defensman in the NHL. What made him so good was being above average at pretty well every aspect and really good at some. One of the smartest players to ever play the game.

What made Lidstrom so good was hit stick checking ability. You never saw him crush people, he was incredibly hard to get around. Beautiful to watch.
