    Ron Edwards Cut

    Panthers released NT Ron Edwards.
The move clears roughly $1.67 million in cap space. It could be seen coming from a mile away for a player who signed a three-year deal after the lockout. Edwards missed all of 2011 with a torn triceps, and was limited to 11 games last season by a dislocated elbow. Going on 34, Edwards wasn't productive when he took the field. He'll have a rough go of it in free agency.

Not surprising. Next up: Chris Gamble. Joe Person says cutting Edwards saves $2.5MM (not $1.67MM), Panthers are $3.5 million over cap.

Greg Olsen also restructured his deal so that helped alot.

Greg Olsen has restructured his contract.
Olsen has converted $3 million of his $3.75 million salary into an option bonus, creating $2.4 million in cap space. He's also due a $250,000 workout bonus. It helps the Panthers with one of the worst salary-cap situations in the league. Mar 1 - 11:14 AM

Not surprised, but I am somewhat surprised that he was cut before Gamble. I wonder if there's any chance that Gamble is negotiating to stay? I can't imagine the staff would let him linger around this long and not give him chances to set up workouts with other teams if they aren't trying to keep him. Of course, the only way he stays is if he significantly drops his cap hit AND signs a deal that would be low and keep him in Carolina the rest of his career.

I figured Ron would be a casualty, but I wasn't sure if the team was ready to drop our only NT.

When I read this I was so happy I could not put it into words. I am liking Gettleman a lot right now LOL.

The Panthers reworked S Haruki Nakamura's contract so that he's now only signed through 2013.
The sides ripped up Nakamura's old three-year, $4.8 million deal, and he essentially now has a brand-new one-year, $815,000 contract with $300,000 more available in incentives. He got a $65,000 signing bonus. Nakamura isn't assured of a roster spot, but he now has the contract of a strict special teamer.

According to ESPN with all the recent moves we are still 6.5M over the cap. I am guessing they were using the old cap number of around 120M instead of the new number 123M. ESPN is becoming a joke with its inaccurate and slow information. Here is a link to the article.

I love the Nakamura contract. Nakamura must like Charlotte if he was willing to more or less go back to what he did in Baltimore. I also like that we still keep him on the team, because he honestly wasn't bad in run-situations and short fields. I still remember that INT he made on Matt Ryan in the end-zone, which was unfortunately overshadowed by that godawful attempt at of defending Roddy White deep...

I just wish there was an official source of what our cap-space is. I've seen reports that we're already under by 900k, but I've also seen reports of 2M over, 3M over, 5M over, and 6M over. Obviously I'd hope it's the first, but I'd say we're probably in the 2-4M over range. Either way, once Gamble is cut we'll be just fine (in terms of March 12th, that is).

No joke. Nakamura was awful last year. This contract makes him expendable if he sucks up the place again.
