Collins set to address Mets today

PORT ST. LUCIE — Terry Collins will bring plenty of optimism and fire to the meeting room today, but may avoid trying to paint the Mets as underdogs this season.

In a rite of February, the manager will address his team before it takes the field for its initial full-squad workout of spring training.

“I have about three pages of things I want to say and I’m ready to condense it down to a half-page,” Collins said yesterday. “I will make a final judgment [this morning] of what I really think needs to be said.”
If he really wants to say what needs to be said, he should march up to Sandy Alderson's office and ask him "How the F do you expect me to win with a team that doesn't have a F-ing outfield?"

Collins isn't the one who is painting the team underdogs. The GM did a damned good job of that himself!

    Geez!

Seriously though, what the hell is Terry Collins going to say to this team that will make a bit of difference in the long run?

I assume Terry will play up the "we will have competition on this ballclub at multiple positions" card as much as possible. He wants hungry, motivated players to earn their spots this spring. While I wish we had at least respectable OF to hang our hats on, I'm certainly excited about the rest of the team. I think the Mets will be a tougher team than most think.

By all rights, Terry Collins should have a contract extension. I am not faulting the FO for not giving him one, as it gives us another year to evaluate. But he has earned one IMO. He has earned one for keeping this team relevant into the summer months. He has also earned one for having to manage the crappy team they keep giving him, just for the pain and suffering aspect of it all.

Collins will be Sandy's scapegoat for another failure, HIS failure to improve the team at all, in particular the OF.

I feel sorry for him, because Alderson has thrown him under the bus.

And "ultimately," Alderson said, "we're judged on whether we win or lose."

I can't see what he has done wrong to be left dangling as a lame-duck manager. But then again, when have the Mets ever been a baseball first type franchise?

He gets the most out of his players but he makes too many questionable in game decisions.

It seems Terry doesn't have issues in the clubhouse that would make being a lame duck manager problematic. I think he's been fantastic and deserves an extension, but I don't think not having one will create a problem.

All managers make questionable in-game decisions. Find me a single manager that has been immune to second-guessing by know-it-all fans.

Some make more than others. Of course, one needs to have the ability to question authority in order to see them.

Teams take on the persona of the manager and TC is a loser. He's an emotional baby and would cry during interviews. He sat back last season and just gave up, I don't wanna see that crap anymore. I hope he's gone at the end of the year.

I'd like to know how a manager "gives up." Were you there in the clubhouse to hear any speeches? Did he fill out his lineup card half way and stop and say "You know, I just don't like feel like doing this. Hey, Warthen. Do this for me."?

I really like Collins. I hope he's around for at least 2014 and 2015 if he doesn't do anything that would get him fired right away, whether it him being incredibly stupid with the team and/or failing miserably. I think if he's given a team that has, say, a 50/50 chance to make the postseason, he can lead them there.
