The Jet Press article: How Good Was Coples This Year?

We have talked quite a lot about the Jets defensive line. Karl Dunbar made a huge impact on this group, as Muhammad Wilkerson and Quinton Coples are going to be huge parts of this team for a long time. We have gone over Wilkerson’s season at length, but what about Coples?

How did he really fare compared to his peers? We know he led the team in sacks with 5.5, but let’s look at his grade on Pro Football Focus to see how he compared to others.

He was a top 20 defensive end amongst 3-4 players, ranked 19th overall with a 1.4 overall grade. His impact shows even more in his pass rushing grade, where he moves up to the top 10 with a 4.9, grading him higher than great Baltimore Raven Haloti Ngata. He tied for fourth in the league with 9 quarterback hits.

He fell of a bit against the run, with a grade of only a -1.5. Interesting, however, he did better in pass coverage with a 1.0 grade in pass coverage. What does that tell us? Quinton is becoming quite the versatile player, who will be effective dropping off the line into coverage, as well as coming after the passer.

What is the next step for Quinton Coples? Improve his prowess against the run. His -1.5 grade is nowhere near good enough, and it showed in his playing time, as Quinton only played in 172 snaps against the run. He needs to become a better run stopper with only a 7.6 run stop percentage. Not playing that many snaps should have given him the ability to have a higher percentage than that.

A pass rusher is one thing, but a complete player is something else. The Jets need a complete player as a first round draft pick, and that is the step we will be looking for in 2013.

coples showed a lot of promise and versatility his rookie season, and it's nice to see the numbers justify the "eye test." with more snaps this season and another full offseason and TC to gain more knowledge of the system and strength, the future is bright for our young and ferocious d-line!

the most promising thing is that he put up these numbers in limited snaps... wait til he gets a full workload this season

If he develops as well from year 1 to 2 as Big Mo he is going to be a staight up problem for offenses. I am hoping our defense adds a shinny new toy in round 1 that will get a lot of the credit because of raw numbers but I fully expect him to be a big part of why our defense works next season.

With as good as Big Mo is against the run I dont mind if Coples doesnt become a dominant run stuffer as long as his pass rushing ability continues to develop.

i think the question needed to be asked is.. IF one of the top 2 DT's Star/Floydd fall to 9 by miricle. Would adding a supposedly 'stud DT' in the first and ignoring OLB/OL be more beneficial? We would then likely cut sinoe to clear some needed cap space (3 mil if memory serves).. Then that DL looks amazing but the back end suffers.

Personally i still wouldnt take a DT. We need OLB (D Jordan fingers crossed) or OG (Warmack) Gotta fill holes. Sione, is on the roster, and when healthy is worth keeping.

if star falls, i think you have to take him, regardless of position. the guy may become one of the top-3 performers in this class, which is all anyone will remember down the road... not whether we passed on a position of need for a position of lesser need.

as a gator alum and fan, i'd love to have floyd, but i don't think he's worth taking at 9. he's not star lotuleilei. even my gator-colored glasses tell me that.

SFloyd has no position on the Jets, where as Star would.

SFloyd is barely 300lbs, he's not big enough to play nose, he's perfect for the 4-3 DT, but not 3-4 NT.

Star could fit in any system as a DT or NT, because he has the size and strength.

Don't want SFloyd anywhere near the Jets in the 1st round.

I hope we don't take another DLineman first round, **** that we better not take another DL. We have too many other holes we need to fill. We can't start taking luxury picks. I'd be halfway done wit the Jets if I watch draft for another DL in the first round. I think we pretty set upfront for now.

I agree about Floyd. He is a prototypical 4-3 DT.

I wouldn't draft a NT at #9 overall. In Rex Ryan's defense, the NT needs to eat up space and occupy blockers. I would rather the Jets draft a big body later in the draft than use a top pick on a NT.

Didn't know Coples was that good. He's going to have a bigger role for us next season for sure, let's see what he can produce then, if anyone hasn't seen this I highly reccomend it.

I'm going out on a limb here, but if he can produce some JJ Watt type numbers that would be great. He has the skills to do it, but with him its all attitude and how he will apply himself. Good luck next season Coples, we are gonna need ya!!!
