Deng to decide on surgery after the season

HOUSTON – Chicago Bulls forward Luol Deng says he will make a final decision on whether or not to have surgery on his left wrist after the season is over.

Deng, who tore a ligament in the wrist in a Jan. 21 game last season against the Charlotte Bobcats, opted not to have surgery and played through pain until the Bulls were knocked out in the first round of the Eastern Conference Playoffs last season. He opted against surgery again to play for Team Great Britain in the Olympics last summer. He has acknowledged all along that surgery may not be needed, but he will withhold final judgement until after the season ends.

"I don't know yet," he said. "That decision will come after the season. I decided way before the Olympics that I wasn't going to have it (this season).”

Deng, who had the same injury in his right wrist during his rookie year, said Derrick Rose's ability to return wouldn’t have any bearing on his decision whether or not to play.

Deng will be playing in his second All-Star Game on Sunday night.

Im ok with this he should have done it last year but he wanted to play for his country and there is nothing wrong with that. I think that the sooner he does it the better I don't see us really contending this year unless Rose comes back and we take a 1-3 spot in the East.

God what an idiot, he shoulda done it right after the Olympics. Now with Rose coming back, we have to wait for Deng to recoup?

I have no problem with this announcement considering Deng's contributions over the past couple of years. If he has surgery in the off-season and misses time to rehab, I'm fine with it. It may be a thorn in the side of management, but Deng has earned more than enough respect to deserve any ire from fans.
