    Fred's 2013 1st Round Mock Draft - 1.0 (Pre-combine)

OK, so here is my first mock of the draft season. I took into account what each team needs, and what players might be available at that pick. I reviewed 15 different mocks to see who was the highest rated players based on those mocks. thus, here is my first attempt. I will account for the combine and free agency signings in future mocks. This also assumes that there are no trades in the first round (and of course, there are likely to be some).

Feel free to tear this apart

    First Round:

#1) Kansas City: Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia
Comments: I personally would never pick him here; but, based on the team needs and that he is likely the best QB AND that the mocks averaged him out to the 5th highest player on my "big board" and he is the pick.
    Other possibilities: Lotulelei, Joeckel

#2) Jacksonville: Star Lotulelei, DT, Utah
Comments: Easy one. They need DL. IMO, the best DL in this draft is Star.
Other possibilities: Lerner, Jarvis (too early for Milliner, although they need a CB and QB)

#3) Oakland: Damontre Moore, DE, Texas A&M
Comments: Addresses one of their biggest needs
    Other possibilities: Werner, Joekel

#4) Philadelphia: Luke Joekel, OT, Texas A&M
Comments: might be the best player in the draft and falls to Philly
Other possibilities: Jones (Jarvis), Werner, Milliner

#5) Detroit: Bjoern Werner, DE, Florida St
Comments: They keep building around their DL
    Other possibilities: Milliner, Vaccaro

#6) Cleveland: Barkevious Mingo, LB, LSU
Comments: Would prefer a QB but not this high; they take the LB
Other possibilities: They could trade down a few

#7) Arizona: Eric Fisher, OT, Central Michigan
Comments: They need QB, OL, LB; if there, Smith is the pick
    Other possibilities: could see them reaching for a QB if Smith gone;

#8) Bills: Jarvis Jones, LB, Georgia
Comments: They have many needs, including QB, but don't reach for one.
    Other possibilities: Milliner, Jordan

#9) NY Jets: Chance Warmack, OG, Alabama
Comments: They need to bolster their OL
Other possibilities: Jordan, Johnson (Lane), they could reach for a QB here

#10) Tennessee: Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama
Comments: Titans ecstatic to see Milliner fall to them
    Other possibilities: Vaccaro, Warford

#11) San Diego: Dion Jordan, DE, Oregon
Comments: Need to bolster their defense
    Other possibilities: Johnson, Vaccaro

#12) Miami: Lane Johnson, OT, Oklahoma
Comments: They anticipate losing Long and grab his replacement
    Other possibilities: Vaccaro, Patterson

#13) Tampa: Cordarrelle Patterson, WR, Tennessee
Comments: Arguably the best offensive skill player in a weak draft
    Other possibilities: Vaccaro, Rhodes

#14) Carolina: Kenny Vaccaro, FS, Texas
Comments: This fills one of their biggest needs by grabbing the best safety in the class
    Other possibilities: Richardson, Ansah

#15) New Orleans: Alec Ogletree, LB, Georgia
Comments: Ryan gets a MLB for his 3-4
    Other possibilities: Warford, Cooper

#16) St Louis: Larry Warford, OG, Kentucky
Comments: They address one of their needs
    Other possibilities: Allen, Cooper

#17) Pittsburgh: Manti Te'o, LB, Notre Dame
Comments: This team gets the best from their LB's and continue the tradition with Te'o
    Other possibilities: Allen, Ertz

#18) DALLAS: Sheldon Richardson, DT, Missouri
Comments: If they truly take the BPA for their needs, this is it at this point.
    Other possibilities: Ansah, Floyd, Cooper

#19) NY Giants: Jonathan Cooper, OG, North Carolina
Comments: The Giants live in the trenches and add another body
    Other possibilities: Fluker, Rhodes

#20) Chicago: Keenan Allen, WR, California
Comments: They need skill players to take the next step
    Other possibilities: Fluker, Ertz

#21) Cincinnati: Eddie Lacy, RB, Alabama
Comments: They need to improve the running game and grab lacy early
    Other possibilities: Minter, ansah

#22) St Louis (from Wash): Zach Ertz, TE, Stanford
Comments: Already helped the OL; they help the offense further with their 2nd pick in the first

#23) Minnesota: Ezekiel Ansah, DE, BYU
Comments: they get some pass rush help for the other side
    Other possibilities: Floyd, Hankins

#24) Indianapolis: Xavier Rhodes, CB, Florida St
Comments: they address a need for the defense
    Other possibilities: Floyd, Hankins

#25) Seattle: Shariff Floyd, DT, Florida
Comments: they add another animal to their aggressice defense
    Other possibilities: Hankins, Fluker

#26) Green Bay: Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre Dame
Comments: They wanted a skill player and thie was the best remaining; Rodgers will love him
    Other possibilities: Fluker, Austin

#27) Houston: Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia
Comments: Another weapon for their offense
    Other possibilities: Fluker, Minter

#28) Denver: Johnathan Hankins, DT Ohio St
Comments: Hankins was rated higher, but falls to them
    Other possibilities: Short, Williams (Sylvester)

#29) New England: Johnthan Banks, CB, Mississippi St
    Comments: They address a need
    Other possibilities: Fluker, Short

#30) Atlanta: Kawann Short, DT, Purdue
Comments: Their offense runs well, time to help the DL
    Other possibilities: Williams (Syl), Minter

#31) San Francisco: DJ Fluker, OT, Alabama
Comments: they made it to the SB with great lines, they add a versatile player to their OL
Other possibilities: Could trade down here; too higher for the other safeties to be picked

Depending on combine and what not I could see Flyod and Ansah both going top 10, but besides that overall great mock.

Really like Sheldon Richardson to Dallas. I think this kid will be a great player and should be exactly what we need on D-Line

    thanx.

I have seen those guys names around a little, but I based some of the "methodology" on 15 other mocks/lists by people who do that for a living and a few other sites thrown in. I will update my mock once the combine is over and all of those sites get updated.

One other thing. There are some "experts" that think that there could be 3 or possibly 4 QB's taken in the first rouund, at least 3 before we pick. I SURE HOPE SO! If that is the case, that will free-up a few guys for us.

Conjecture is that Geno Smith goes in the first, but teams that need a QB could get nervous and grab one of the few decent ones early; besides KC, you have Jax, Clev (based on the age of their QB, they might want another one), Arizona,Buffalo, and certainly the Jets that may go QB....they all pick before us

Smith, Glennon, Barkley, Wilson, Nassib, even Bray (although he is a later round guy)...I hope that all of those guys have EXCELLENT combines so their stock rises....the more QB's that get picked before #18, the better

I think we need our O-line firmed up if we are ever going to make a serious playoff run.

I wouldn't mind picking up Davis as a free agent or 6th round pick

Have we learned our lesson yet on oft injured RBs in the draft???? First Felix then Demarco.. but Demarco has shown he's a starter... Please, no more Pig Suey love fest unless we get a player who doesn't have injury issues.. NO to Knile Davis.. If any offensive skilled guy from Arkansas I'd go for WR Cobi Hamilton.. He might've had an injury or two but he's big (6'3 209) and makes plays.. and he's not a converted QB.. take a chance on him and not Davis

Fred, I hope you're right about the Steelers taking Te'o at 17. Last night, one of the Dallas TV stations said that JJ spent quite a bit of time yesterday afternoon talking to Te'o. Does JJ have a man crush on Manti? DON'T DO IT, JERRY!!!
