Note to Jose: Next time get a NTC

He had to know this was coming. I knew this was coming. Most fans in this forum knew this was coming. When Jeffrey Loria signed Jose Reyes to a backloaded 6-year contract, Jose had to know he was going to be traded within two years of signing it. I didn't think the trade would be after year one but i can't say i was surprised either. It's just the way Loria rolls.

How disgusting though that Loria wanted him to buy a house in Miami knowing a trade was in the works? How disgusting!?

I'm sure Jose will do well in Toronto. Damned he would have been a great fit on this team. Tejada could have platooned at second base with Murphy while serving as the backup short stop. The infield would be stronger leaving us about two legitimate, not great but legitimate, outfielders away from being a bonifide good ballclub.

    Sigh.

you know what though it might be a blessing in disguise. That Toronto team has a chance to compete and he is in the prime of his career. I don't know how other Mets fans feel but I wish Jose does extremely well. One of the most exciting players the Mets ever had and he deserves to have a chance to compete again and make up for those tough losses in 06-08 just like Wright someday does.

Reyes is a great player and I wish he was still here and all that, but he never struck me as the sharpest knife in the drawer. If he was signing a dollar friendly contract, he should have gotten a no trade concession.

But isn't that what agents are for????

That wouldn't have happened with a Boras client.

Let me be the cynic. Why does an agent care what happens to a player as long as the agent gets his 15% cut -- or whatever the amount. It's in the best interests of the agent to negotiate the highest dollar value for his clients. He doesn't have to move city to city if the player is traded.

Because an agent is a salesman.

A good salesman is concerned about the sale in front of him but, more importantly, about the follow up sale, referrals and repeat business. If I was Reyes, I'd get another agent. If I were another player, I'd never use Reyes' agent.

Why does Boras have so many clients????

The agent needs to have happy clients, and they need to spread the agent's reputation.
If Boras were Reye's agent, he'd have had an opt out clause, and be playing for the Yankees next year.

I still love how Miami gave up Josh Johnson, Jose Reyes, Mark Buehrle, and more, and we're the ones who come away with the Jays top prospects in d'Arnaud and Syndergaard.

    Thanks Miami! lol.

Peter Greenberg routinely is among the top 5 highest paid agents in MLB. He also represents Johann Santana. Both he and Reyes were motivated by a paycheck first and foremost. Can't say I blame them.

Point being what???? He has other clients????

Good for him. However, he made a bad deal for Reyes. Reyes could have gotten more and easily could have gotten a NTC from someone.

Point being they took the money rather than shop around for stability, and that obviously he's well versed in negotiating no trade clauses. Point being that he was looking for a payday as wrll.

Reyes could have gotten more? Where? Not one other team pursued him aggressively.

Well is not like Reyes had other 100+ million offers on the table right then and then and obviously the Miami FO sold him a lie, but in this i have zero sympathy for Reyes. He is getting paid a ton, so if he got lied to, tough ****, business is business and he got paid pretty well. Yes he should of gotten that from the Mets, but that is a different story.

If I recall, Reyes signed pretty quickly. I'm not sure how much shopping around actually took place. (Can't believe we're still going over this.)

With all the high end players that have signed recently, this seems like it was one of the weaker contracts signed, the $$$$ notwithstanding. Other guys get opt outs, buy outs, NTCs limited trades. Why wouldn't Reyes get this.

Maybe Reyes was sold a bill of goods and he told his agent to get the job done quickly. I don't know. Just seems like a good agent for a top FA would not have allowed this to happen.

Yeah Reyes signed in early December so the market wasn't even really established yet.
