I like hearing that we are staying in a 4-3. We do have to get younger, but that can come.

We've been hearing for a while now that the Chicago Bears roster is getting older and older, particularly on the defensive side of the ball, so it's no surprise that a recent list of top players under the age of 25 included no one from our roster.

For the record, neither did any of the other NFC North teams.

With that said, I looked back at some stats from the beginning of the 2012 season, and found some numbers that shows just how old the Chicago Bears roster is compared to the rest of the league.

Overal, the Bears fielded the 4th-oldest starting lineup in week 1 of the 2012 season, just behind the Chargers, Falcons, and Giants.

For the 2010 season, the Bears has the 21st-oldest roster, so we've seen a huge jump in age over the last couple years.

Currently on the Chicago Bears roster, we've got 21 players that are 28 years old or older, and 13 that are over 30 years old:

    Hester, Devin WR 30
    Scott, Jonathan T 30
    Spencer, Chris G/C 30
    Campbell, Jason QB 31
    Tillman, Charles CB 31
    Briggs, Lance LB 32
    Idonije, Israel DL 32
    Garza, Roberto C/G 33
    McCown, Josh QB 33
    Peppers, Julius DE 33
    Urlacher, Brian LB 34
    Mannelly, Pat LS 37
    Mare, Olindo K 39

Looking at that list, it could be argued that a handful of those players won't be back in 2013. Hester is on the fence with retirement, and could be cut if he doesn't, Campbell's contract is up and wants to compete for a starting job somewhere, Urlacher is no longer under contract, and Mare only had a one-season deal for 2012.

It's impossible to gauge exactly where teams rank with age of rosters, as players are constantly being cut, traded, etc., but one thing we do know: The Bears ain't young, and it might be time to start infusing the roster with a little more youth.

I wanted to post this for a reference to what I said in the above post.

Yeah I mean defensively, our youth is really: Melton, Paea, Woottonn, McClellin, Wright, Conte...and that's about it.

Granted, the Ravens won a super bowl with an aged core, and that was with them ALL playing through fairly serious injuries.

The defensive age isn't a huge issue IMO. There isn't a single D in the NFL that's loaded with all players under 25. You need veterans and the Bears have a nice mix of young/old. Sure, they need to reload in some areas, but some of the media acts as if this D is nothing but players in their late 30's and there's very little hope for the future, which just isn't true.

Now if the Bears do something stupid like let Melton go, then they could be in some trouble...but there's no reason you can't build around him, Paea, Wootton, Wright & Conte.

So it's confirmed that Kroemer is going to install a zone-blocking scheme...I'm excited for Forte, that is IF we can actually get some linemen to implement it. Debo, I'm curious if you read this, do any of the Bears current lineman in your opinion fit the mold of a ZBS?

I think they all make more sense in a ZBS except for Gabe, personally. We just don't have maulers (save for Gabe).

Now, if we're going to run a ZBS, Gabe with a little bit of heft added to him could be really sexy on the interior (but I'd still rather keep him at OT).

Drafting a MLB in the 1st and a DE in the 4th, while keeping Melton could keep our defense on track while getting younger in the process. I fully expect us to draft a CB early in next year's draft.
FYI: If all you can do is offer insults and show no respect for others, there is a very good chance you are on my ignore list!!!!!

I'd love to take the chance on Mathieu, but he'll be long gone before our 4th.

I wouldn't be surprised if he goes undrafted tbh. He is a talent for sure. I wonder what is up with Ray Ray Armstrong these days????

Holy **** Chris Harris is quitting twitter? That's the best part about that press conference.
