Ryan O'Reilly, it appears certain, will play his next NHL game for a team not named the Avalanche.
Talks between the 22-year-old center and the Avs have broken off, and the team is exploring a trade. The issue of why things went so bad between the popular player and Avs management boils down to money. It's always about money.
But there are other side issues. Most of them are petty and egocentric on both sides. There probably will be lessons both sides take out of this if and when O'Reilly is dealt.
The Avs didn't want to pay O'Reilly any more than what they're paying Matt Duchene, which is an average of $3.5 million over the next two years. Whether he should be paid more is open to debate.
