All 80's Team (please cast your vote)

This will be a large series where each decade I and others will create a roster of the best players of that decade

This is a discussion thread for each decade. I will create a roster and I invite everyone else to do the same. We can discuss and come down with a final team. Then we will have a tournament series of these best decade teams against each other and vote.


Here are the rules:

8 position players (no DH's since teams prior to the 70's didn't have them)
1 bench player can play any position
5 starters
1 reliever/closer

For a player to be selected to a position, he must have spent the majority of his games at that position over the decade (i.e. Robin Yount is a shortstop for the 80's, 5650 innings at shortstop, 5395 CF). The years will go from 2000-2009 for example, 1990-1999, 1980-1989. So make sure if you are looking up numbers that you look at the right series of years.

So without further explanation. I'll make my roster, I invite everyone to do the same. Depending on the discussion, we'll decide what the final roster for each decade needs to be, and then we will move the thread into the MLB Comps section.

My 80's team

C - Gary Carter. Pretty easy selection.

Parish and Fisk aren't bad choices for second and third

1B - Eddie Murray. Fairly easy as well

Keith Hernandez, Don Mattingly, Hrbek and Clark are all well behind him.

2B - Lou Whitaker.

Ryne Sandberg isn't far behind, but he is behind him. Willie Randolph is third

3B - Wade Boggs

Brett and Schmidt are both obviously there as well. I just love what Boggs did, and with 50 points in OBP over Schmidt and Brett. (.352/.443/.480 for the decade. Insane)

SS - Robin Yount

Easily the most difficult position to decide.

Really unfortunate that Trammell, Ripken, and Ozzie don't get the nod here.

LF - Rickey Henderson

Tim Raines is the only second place choice, nobody is worth mentioning for third.

CF - Dale Murphy

Might be the weakest starter of any position yet.

RF - Andre Dawsom
With Dwight Evans and Tony Gwynn second and third

Bench - Mike Schmidt

Because he clearly belongs, just unfortunate he is behind the second best player of the decade in Boggs.

Henderson is the best offensive player of the decade.

I wanted to vote Ozzie. And shortstop is quite a debate. Ozzie, Trammell, and Ripken are all close.

It's not like it's insanely easy to keep track of the votes when you have various players voted in at various positions.

Keeping it consistent is what makes it work.

Gotta compare them to the players that played there.

Most of the guys you mentioned are obviously behind someone better.

Strawberry and Gooden didn't even play the entire decade. They obviously are behind better players. Even if they had peak seasons in the 80's

You have to realistic dude..

Gooden only started in 84' and his career peaked in 85'.

He was solid through the rest of the decade but Stieb with the exception of 86' and 87' had the better cumulative numbers over the decade (mainly because his career started in 79' and he actually pitched the whole decade).

Gooden - 1284 IP, 175 starts, 2.65 ERA, 2.54 FIP, 34.2 fWAR, 29.3 rWAR
Stieb - 2310 IP, 331 starts, 3.32 ERA, 3.77 FIP, 41.6 fWAR, 45.6 rWAR

Gooden was elite when he did pitch, but half as many innings as Stieb.

Who would you rather have for the entire decade? Give me the guy that actually pitched.

And Strawberry is easy to leave off.
