I like the idea of having FF, Valverde, Feliciano, Hawkins and Byrdak as veterans along with Parnell, Edgin, Familia, Carson and Mejia. That's 10 arms to make 7 in the pen...three are either at AAA or on the DL. What we cannot afford is another year in which RR failed, Acosta stunk, Schwinden, Stinson, Hefner and Beato proved to be AAAA pitchers and Parnell and Rauch were underwhelming and FF fizzled. Six failures and two decent 8th inning guys and a mediocre closer. Adding three veterans and four kids reduces the risk of a meltdown. And remember, the pen last year fell apart after Santana and Gee were lost for the season and their replacements combined to go 3-13 6.50 in 22 GS with few starts lasting past the fifth inning----overwork leads to injury and ineffectiveness. A solid starting five plus Wheeler in the wings to spell Santana after the ASB when he needs to pitch every sixth day will make the entire staff look very much better. I figure a team ERA around 3.80 this year...about 5th in the league if they add a guy like Valverde.
When it comes to relievers its best to get them at your price.
Gotta's point about throwing significant money at pens is correct. All you need to do is look at a guy like Fernando Rodney last year to show you how bi polar certain pen arms can be.
The guy has a 3.75 career ERA and last year it was 0.60 and he arguably had one of the best (if not the best) closer's season of all time.
Isn't it best to get everyone at your price? Trouble is the Mets price is always designed to be too low, they must think people are stupid, and it seems they're right in a lot of cases.
They don't throw significant money anywhere. If pens are such a crap shoot, how come the Mets never have a good one?
This is why Mets fans are risk-averse, there's nothing they like better than their team rummaging through the garbage. Always the same tune - cheaper is better, let's sign someone to minor league deal instead, let's keep payroll low...
Oh noes get the worry beads out a player wants a 2 year deal!!! - OMG this could ruin the team for 10 years!!! - Oh the humanity!!! 2 years!!!
I'm absolutely certain that this team attracts cheap fans. I have never seen a major market fan base that is so lily-livered and weak, so grateful for crumbs, so scared of trying to win, and the Coupons are the perfect owners for that kind of fan, because they're not too bothered about ever going for the gusto either.
Just so weak and scared of success, far happier in the shadows sniping at Yankee fans, cheering on our loser team with no ambition that makes the post-season once a decade and then goes back to sleep.
