Mets interested in Jose Valverde;Offer out to Non Closer

According to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, the Mets are interested in Jose Valverde, and while they would consider bringing back Francisco Rodriguez, that remains unlikely.

In addition, Rubin says it is no very unlikely the Mets sign Brian Wilson, although they do have a current offer out to a non-closer and expect to hear back from him shortly.

AdamRubinESPN Alderson did say last night on SNY that if he doesn't land a closer (Valverde, whomever), Bobby Parnell would contest Francisco for closer.

AdamRubinESPN Heard Brandon Lyon is still talking to several teams and nothing is imminent with him signing.

That's the guy i would like is Lyon and Alderson was very non committal about FF when he was on SNY last night.

Heyman also mentioned the Mets are looking for more bullpen help.

Continuing to throw money at the pen is a mistake in my opinion.

It's a crapshoot, year after year, and I think history proves that as long as you have a couple of specialty guys you can depend upon (LOOGY, ground ball specialist, etc.) you're probably better of just mixing up some young arms in the pen rather than trying to hit jackpot by paying for FA acquisitions.

The Mets are interested in signing Valverde, but only on their terms. Rubin suggests the Mets might be prepared to guarantee Valverde $4MM on a deal with significant incentives. Though the Mets have some interest in Rodriguez, he is believed to be seeking about $7MM, according to Rubin. Both free agent right-handers are clients of the Boras Corporation.

Well to be fair the only thing they have committed to this point is a minor league roster spot to these guys.

I agree throwing money at a bullpen is never a good solution but this bullpen needed a makeover after last year. I think they will find a few veterans to mix in with their younger guys and see what happens.

They also really need to address the FF situation. He was terrible last year and Parnell wasn't very good as the closer in his absence.

Throwing a multi year deal at FF was absurd from the start. The pen investments last winter should be regarded as Alderson's worst decisions as Met GM, other than losing Reyes for a 3rd round pick.

I'm very wary in general of multi-year, or even multi-million dollar pen deals. I think it's the single riskiest investment a baseball team can make. Very often pens that are successful only have 1 or 2 specialty arms and rotate young arms year after year. And just as often, pens with big investments fail to meet their expectations.

To put it plain, I'd rather that money be used towards investments in the OF (an area of need we are not likely to fill properly through our minor league system), than be put towards the pen (where our plethora of talented young arms could very well fill the void effectively).

That's fair but a few veterans who aren't guaranteed next to nothing or nothing on a minor league deal (depending on i believe the new rule where if they release them right before ST ends they owe them like 80 grand) is not a huge issue. In fact, the biggest issue is the one Sick mentioned where if a veteran guy takes a roster spot they might unfortunately have to let go of a Reese Havens or Zach Lutz.

I don't love that either but what i love less is seeing the bullpen implode night in and night out like it did last year.

I like Familia, Mejia, and Edgin and the Mets have some promising minor league SP arms that could help in relief this year but if their intention is sure up the closer spot then imo do it.

Especially if they can get a Valverde or K-Rod at their price.

They just don't want to pay anyone.

Pursuing, linked, interested ad nauseum, very rarely do we ever read SIGNED...

'At their price' ie: Less thas it will take.
