Positional Value

I've been meaning to make this thread for a few days. I've been debating this idea of positional value (specifically in relation to the Bears' pick). So, I'm looking for some other opinions. Do you believe in positional value? Do you think positional value should override a best player available approach? Is positional value something that should be taken in to account when constructing a big board?

For example, I would consider Chance Warmack a better overall prospect than Lane Johnson. But, Warmack is a pure OG. So, even though I think Warmack is a better overall prospect I think I would be leery of taking him at 20, but I would take Lane Johnson.

I don't have any statistical research and in a quick google search I didn't find any articles I liked. But, if you have any research I would like to see it.

I myself would never take a OG in the top 20 picks.

So many good OGs have been taken in round 2-4.

Its hard to find a good LT who wasn't taken in the 1st round. Few 2nd round guys and Petters who was a UDFA.

Here's the draft slot of every projected LT for next year as of now.

All the starting LT's. Projected for next year. Lowest to highest. 256 being a UDFA. Average pick # is the last number

UDFA's were Peters and Donald Penn. Both pretty good.

Those other high numbers, one is Newhouse, one is Gaither, one is Webb. One is uhh Bushrod. Missing one more, forget now.

Basically 2/3 to 3/4 of the starting LT's in the NFL are second rounders or above or VERY close to being.

I'd agree that he could/should be that level of player. But if he's not it's a ****** pick to blow on a guard that early.

Sometimes though, players like OG or TE. End up being the safest picks just for the fact for them to get that high...it means they're REALLY ****ing good.

If you can get an elite player it is worth the #1 overall it's much better than having a player at a sexy position who may not even be a top 10-15 player.

I think SF proved the value of elite non LT lineman. I have a football crush on Iupati, he is basically the perfect guard. He improves everyone elses play because he never needs a double team. Staley went from good to elite this year because of Iupati.

Corner. Top corners are fewer and far between even though I value pass rush more.
