Pretty sure Kansas City is south west in relation to Long Island. It's not like you can head directly west on a straight path and reach KC. So you have to go down (south) at some point to get there. That is like correcting someone when they say "I'm going down to Tampa" when they live in NYC. Tampa is also south west of NYC.

To me going down..in relevance too location= Going south. Kansas City in relevance to where I live, is generally just west. With a few miles south. I would never say I'm going "down" to Kansas City if I ever where to visit, I would said I'm going too Kansas city.

Down does not indicate going "south"

People say I'm going down to the store to pick up a pack of cigarettes, it doesn't necessarily mean they are going south.

To me going down..in relevance too location= Going south. Kansas City in relevance to where I live, is generally just west. With a few miles south. I would never say I'm going "down" to Kansas City if I ever where to visit, I would said I'm going too Kansas city.

Any human with some common sense knows that when someone say "I'm going down the street" they don't necessarily always mean actually going south. However when traveling a large distance, "down" actually means going south at some point. No one says "I'm going down to Canada" if they live in Florida. No one says "I'm going down to Michigan " if they live in Texas. However it's not uncommon or wrong if someone says "I'm going down to Missouri" if that person lives on New York.

My Dad's always been the guy that simply got autographs of guys you'd never really have heard of unless you followed the team at the time. So over the last 3 years I've gotten him a Kershaw ball and an Aaron Rogers helmet. (Packers fan as well)
