But he did beat Peyton Manning and Tom Brady.![]()
Smith threw nowhere near as much as the Ravens needed Flacco to. Flacco has thrown 531 and 542 times the past two seasons, versus Smith's projected 387 (had he started all 16 games) and 445 times. Flacco (as well as several other QBs) could have similar success that Smith had if they had an OC that barely asked them to throw and a defense that has been widely considered the #1 defense over the past two seasons that could prevent the offense from having to win with the pass.
While Smith appears to be much cheaper, everyone knows Flacco isn't getting $20M/season without earning it first. He'll be franchised at least two times unless he takes a lesser deal. The Ravens have at least two more seasons to figure things out.
Where Joe Flacco has his biggest leverage is his past three seasons in the playoffs AND versus the Steelers. As much as people want to rag on Flacco, he's been a key player on that team, even with Ray Rice and the defense being as good as they are.
With the rookie compensation in place, it's going to become the norm with the very rich in the NFL. Middle class will shrink.
