Why did Lewis pay the families of the victims? Kinda strange for an innocent man to pay the families an "undisclosed amount"

So let's summarize PSD's case against Ray. He's a murderer because:
1. An alleged bloody suit was never obtained.
2. His two "accomplices" were only found "not guilty" rather than "innocent"
Some potent ****, guys.

I wasn't making an argument either way, just clearing up a common misconception.
Some people will believe anything just because they want to. Others look for evidence.

Well, the other side to that coin is that most families of murder victims would not accept a pay-off of any kind in lieu of seeing the men responsible locked behind bars or prepped for a sitdown in Old Sparky. That doesn't square with most people's sense of justice. The fact that a family could so quickly accept a pay-off speaks volumes. I'm sure for most of us here, if someone were to take an innocent loved one from your life, them showing up at your door with a check book wouldn't cut it. Not by a longshot.
As far as Ray's perspective, that's easy. The families of the deceased would have filed a civil suit, where the burden of proof is much lower. Innocent or not, the prudent business decision is to settle it out of court. This isn't about whether Ray murdered anyone, but rather, could you convince a jury that he had a hand in their demise. As evinced by some of the comments here, that wouldn't be too difficult to do.

Anything?"
Personally, I'm not saying he's guilty...I'm saying just because the court says your not guilty doesn't mean your 100% clean and innocent
If he was so sure he wasn't involved or it was self-defense why did he change his story? Why did he testify against his friends and take a lesser charge?
