Profootballtalk's Mike Florio reported Sunday night that Alex Smith will likely ask the 49ers to release him after the Super Bowl in order to have "maximum" options on his next team.
The 49ers don't have to oblige, of course. Smith has trade value, and the 49ers won't honor his request if it doesn't help their team. Getting back a draft pick would. If the Niners were to grant Smith's release before March 14, they'd owe him only a $1 million roster bonus for 2013. If traded, San Francisco would be off the hook for all of Smith's $8.5 million in salary and bonuses.

I think the 49ers should trade him for draft picks to a team that'll have a higher pick. Get some more quality depth on the team and make another run for the next few years if possible.

Either way, Smith shouldn't be on the team next year. He wants to start and probably would be willing to do whatever's necessary to leave the team.

Alex Smith is worth at least a 2nd round pick, if he was traded.

If Alex Smith gets picked up by another team, the 49ers will receive a 3rd round pick as compensation.

I don't think the 9ers have the cap space to just hang on to him if they can't get something for they are going to release him, other wise he is going to be one of the top paid back ups in the NFL

a 3rd is all i would offer for a QB with a long history of injuries and who looks like he is just a system quarter back, and will the 9ers really want to have their back up making nearly 9 mill. I don't think so.

There is no compensation if he is released and if he is a back up (which he is) it is pretty much nothing. He's still under contract for 2 years if they can't find a trade partner they will get nothing because they aren't going to pay someone 9M to ride the pine

    Cardinals
    Jets

Nobody will trade the 9ers a draft pick when they know they'll have to release him anyways. They aren't going to pay him that salary to sit the bench. Think about it, Kaep would be getting paid less to be the starter. Not going to happen.

Numbers don't lie only you and some giants fan do to make yourself feel better about the loss your team has coming up.
