Peralta has shed 18 pounds and is working on defensive drills

Hopefully this pays off. I think his offense will definitely improve with the lower weight. I wish he would work on opposite field hitting because he would be deadly if he would go the other way more often.

Also hope his post-season hitting carries over, he struggled in the world series along with everyone else, but he hit .343 against the Yanks and A's in 35 ABs.

You can tell he has heard the trade rumours, and I am willing to bet his agent at a minimum, even possibly Leyland himself told Johnny to get his ***** in gear and give the Tigers a reason to not trade him. This stage in his career, Im quite certain Johnny doesnt want to get traded to an Arizona or San Diego, somewhere where he will not win

Plus I don't think he wants to be moved to 3rd (again), he knows if he gets it in gear, drops the weight and improves his defense he'll keep his gig with us.

Still not a Peralta fan, but at least he is making the effort to improve his game.

If he can improve his range to average or better, I can live with him as he is pretty surehanded and not atrocious at the plate.

"It's good," Peralta said. "I've never been at this weight since I've been with Detroit. I finished last season at 236. I'm at 218 now. (Tigers general manager Dave) Dombrowski and everybody wanted me working on my range. That's why I tried to get lighter. So I can be quicker, especially up the middle." Peralta has made only 14 errors over the last two seasons, but his range has been among the worst in baseball at short, so losing some extra pounds probably won't hurt. Fantasy owners are more concerned about the career-low .689 OPS he had last season.

This is also Peralta's contract year, I'm sure him getting himself into shape doesn't have anything to do with that.
