Lions expected to receive two compensatory draft picks

Each year the NFL awards compensatory draft picks to teams who lost higher profile free agents than they signed the previous offseason.

The exact formula used to determine these bonus selections is unknown, but involves salary, playing time and postseason honors of the players lost.

Using recent history as a guide, the blog 'Blogging the Beast' accurately predicted many of the compensatory selections last season, correctly projecting 26 of 32 within one round.

They are back at it this year, again projecting 32 compensatory picks, including two for the Detroit Lions. They award the team a fourth-round selection for cornerback Eric Wright and a seventh-round choice for quarterback Drew Stanton.

Wright, a starter for the Lions in 2011, signed a five-year, $37.5 million contract with the Tampa Bay Bucs. He started 10 games, making 39 tackles, intercepting one pass, and breaking up seven more.

Wright was also suspended four games for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. He's expected to be released by the Bucs after the Super Bowl, but that should have no impact on the compensation awarded to the Lions.

Stanton originally signed a one-year deal with the New York Jets, but was traded to the Indianapolis Colts after the Jets acquired Tim Tebow. Stanton served as the backup to No.1 pick Andrew Luck and didn't play a snap for the second consecutive season.

Compensatory picks will be announced at the annual league meeting, which takes place March 17-20 in Phoenix, Ariz.

    That'll work.

Stanton's got to be kicking himself for not sticking with the Jets. He would have been the starter there last season.

Good. The Lions could use all the talent they can get.
