The worst thing Magic has said about the Lakers this year was on Friday, when he doubled down on his assertion that the Lakers should immediately trade Dwight Howard for a couple of perimeter players. Of course Magic has been snarking at the Lakers, and kicking them in the balls for several years now, but this is worse, for several reasons.
1. Magic KNOWS that the Lakers need to keep Dwight Howard. He knows that they wouldn't get full value in return for him right now, and he knows that Dwight represents the future of this franchise. He also knows that despite all the criticism Dwight has played quite well, and is on the way back to being 100%.
2. Magic is also aware that the real problem is the coach, Dantoni, and that trading their All Star center for a couple "perimeter players" will just make the problem totally worse, and leave them with no line of retreat from the disasterous Dantoni experiment.
3. Magic is fully aware that Dwight Howard, he of the mega watt "better than Magic" smile, will in the future be a huge superstar in Los Angeles, and that signing Howard has been the crown jewel in Jim Buss's young career as personnel director of the Lakers. But he cynically and snarkily suggests that Buss should immediately give that away and trade Howard, right as the Lakers are at their lowest point and struggling, even while understanding that Howard represents their surest way back to the Finals eventually.
So, what's even worse than Magic A. publicly rooting against the Lakers and picking against them in the past 4 playoff seasons and B. repeatedly kicking them when they're down in this current "Dantoni" season, is that he KNOWINGLY puts it out there and tries to give them bad advice, maliciously more than sarcastically if I read it right, and HOPES that the Lakers trade their best young player and big man, for a couple of Dantoni pieces that Magic knows will make the team worse, and lock them further in to the insane incompetence of Dantoni's system.
This can't be excused by saying that Magic just wants headlines or relevancy, or that he's just telling the truth about the Lakers. This is actively hoping that the Lakers fail, and even throwing out a bit of bait and hoping that they fall for it and make themselves even worse, instead of offering them the right advice that he surely is aware of--that the Lakers should fire or marginalize Dantoni, and continue building around Dwight for the future.
