Mets have interest in long term deal for Michael Bourn

The Mets have sincere interest in signing free-agent OF Michael Bourn to a long-term deal that would likely be backloaded, a source told Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com.

Yesterday, a person familiar with the situation told him there is zero chance the Mets meet Bournís asking price, considering his agent is Scott Boras.

According to the Daily News, the Mets are petitioning MLB to view their top pick as protected, so they would not need to give up draft pick compensation if they sign him.

His skillset isn't going to age well past 34 or so.

I wonder how they qualify long term?

I really don't love giving him more than 3 years.

    Supposedly he's seeking 5 years.

Yeah i am hoping they can negotiate him down considering the lack of interest among the rest of the league to this point.

If we can get our pick protected and get him for 3 years I would be very excited for the signing.

I would do 4 years. I remember watching MLB Network and John Hart said that Bourn should age like a Kenny Lofton type where he's productive into his late 30's. So maybe Sandy sees the same thing

Backloaded deal? I really hope he's not getting around 15M.

The max i would go is 4 years with a team option for a 5th, but obviously 3 years would be ideal

Rules say top 10 picks, period. @ramin808: Not wishful thinking, Mets had a top ten worst record there pick should be protected #mlbdraft

Rules are rules. Wishful thinking. @chrisbirckhead: any thoughts on #mets protest that their 11 pick should be protected? #mlbdraft

I'd be very happy to see Bourn in a Mets uniform. He could be great in Citi Field and putting him in CF would help the defense a ton.

The baseball fan in me would be ecstatic that a big name guy like Bourn would be coming here, but the realistic person in me is going to realize that his contract could end up killing us in a few years.

I'd much rather get him on a 2 year deal and pay him a normal rate than sign him long term and overpay him in the later years.
