Crawford has been pretty injured for 2 years so you can't really use him as an example, but I see your point.

However, ichiro isn't slow and the dude is 39

I have no answer for why they wouldn't even consider him for a DH role. For the last few years they have been discussing having a DH that could alternate in the field so they could have the "revolving door" infield. Instead they go from a combination of two guys that should only play outfield in a pinch to a guy that hasn't worn a glove in ten years. I think that hits at something.
I have the answer.. Nunez can't DH because he has shown no "pop".. Despite what you might think in "hoping" he has it, the statistical evidence is that he does not. Again 1 Hr, 4 Doubles and 1 Triple in 89 At Bats is not worth give him a chance at DH which should be filled by the Ortiz types of players.. I.E. Proven Power or Past Power.

And Nunez was NEVER an option to fill in full time for Arod at 3rd because of his awful defense. All in all he doesn't offer enough (and speed is no enough) to warrant a chance at a a starters job.

Look, I have no guarantee that Nunez would become the player I think he is. But it becomes a calculated risk. Even if Nunez is closer to what you think he is, a combination of him and AJ Pierzynski is a better combination of Youk and whatever crap bag they thrown behind the plate.
Is it? In that scenario You have AJ behind the dish and Nunez at 3rd base. AJ coming off a year he has never had before at an advanced age. At 35 he hit 27 Homeruns when the prvious 2 years he hit ony 8 and 9 hrs in the same at bats, he is now 36. I'd rather chance a rebound from a younger Youklis (33) who had an off year than hope AJ recreates those numbers again in 2013, number he has never seen before.

Again Nunez at 3rd base is a defensive liability. Even worse than Cervalli behind the dish.

thus offensively Nunez > Romine however Youk > AJ

and defensively Youk > Nunez by a lot and Romnie = AJ in this department..

And I'm not convinced they give Romine who has less than 90 Abs total in AAA the job out the gate. Looking at it you are correct the Yankees catcher situation looks bad.. I agree that something should have been done at catcher (not Martin), and I did like AJ, though I did not expect him to hit like 2012.

However, compounding the issues to prove that Nunez does deserve a chance isn't really what we are talking about.

In the former scenario, you put Romine in a better situation to succeed, which in my opinion is why the Yankees can't seem to turn their prospects over at the Major League level, it gives you a catcher who provides better handling of three pitchers like CC, Kuroda and Pettitte, and it gives you a chance to have a young player provide a lot more value than a 1 year/12 million dollar deal. Now, signing Youk had nothing to do with them not signing Pierzynksi I know that. But they chose the wrong youngster to throw in the fire. You can look at it from an old school stat standpoint, a new school standpoint, and an overall baseball logic standpoint, and going with Nunez becomes a no brainer. At least it does in my mind,
Really a no brainer? I disagree with that.. Nunez can not play defense he cannot be a full time 3rd baseman.. Period.. He also does not hit for power and never has shown he can.. I mean aside from in the private confides of your mind.
Again, you simply cannot ignore the statistical evidence. and just wing it at 3rd base with a guy hoping he does something he never has. Sure he can steal, but so did Willie Harris or Joey Gathright. And they were just backups..

They lost 94 games last year too. They needed to do a lot more than we did.

Since we have a spring training thread, it seems like the offseason thread has run its course. Carry over conversation to the stickied spring training thread.
