800-1 mil cap hit.
Thats a pretty nice deal for the Blues.
He was actually good the last time he was in the NHL. Beyond cap reasons, the Rangers would not have sent him down and the biggest reason they did is the cap and their stacked defense.
This is a smart move giving Hitchcock a chance to work with him and Redden will try to reestablish value (so he cang et another decent size contract)
Didn't take long at all. Good for him. Rangers screwed him to an extent. Glad he's got a second chance.

The rangers did absolutely nothing wrong, or differently than any other team (that can afford it) would. He signed a deal that looked bad at the time, an looks like one of the worst ever right now. The Rangers had 0 incentive to keep him with the big team.
Using that logic, he screwed himself by signing such a big deal. I'm sure he didn't mind playing lower competition and still being paid higher than 95% of the NHL.

Its not really wrong per se and I know alot of teams would do it (though only big market cap teams) but it seems wrong just to dismiss talent to a lower league purely because of cap circumvention. There's a reason they eliminated this in the new CBA to a large extent because it was a problem with guys like this. The rangers did absolutely nothing wrong, or differently than any other team (that can afford it) would.

I guess so but that sort of a bad argument. He's taking the money, he's not thinking about being sent down. His agent ****ed him by not getting a no-movement contract though, i agree.Using that logic, he screwed himself by signing such a big deal.
No I'm sure it was humiliating for him and infuriating especially considering he could have been a #4 defenseman in the NHL in all liklihood.I'm sure he didn't mind playing lower competition and still being paid higher than 95% of the NHL.
Redden is an NHL player, the Rangers could have really used him last year if he was making 1 million on their 3rd pairing, but he was making too much money. Also, everyone who assumes the Rangers screwed him over need only look at his level of play. They signed him to play at a level worthy of 6million dollars, he didn't so they put him in the minors, same as anyone else that doesn't perform. It's not like they held him back, they were active looking for people to take him but nobody bit at that salary. Secondly if he really didn't like the AHL he could have broken his contract and played elsewhere but I'm sure he didn't want to leave all that money behind. Having said all that he was a professional through the whole thing, he helped out the young guys in Connecticut and was a leader for the Whale and I wish him all the best, I hope he gets another 3-4 years in the NHL as that's where he deserves to be playing.

Good for him. Hate seeing these guys get buried. Where's Jeff Finger these days?
Redden to me will be similar to a guy like Nikita Nikitin who did well under Hitchcock but was traded to CLB. I think he will thrive as a #3-5 and get something in the 3 million range next season from a team like Detroit, or Nashville.
lol, small kid got tripped by a tuba player
The guy was being paid like a Top pairing defenseman and was playing worse than a bottom pairing defenseman. If he was any bit good at all he would have had a spot, but he wasn't.
He also had a history of drug problems, maybe that had something to do with his drop off in play.
Either way, the Rangers didn't screw him. They screwed themselves by giving him that contract but at the end of the day he still made 35 million dollars and the Rangers bought him out early to allow him to come back into the NHL and possibly help a team that they will be competing with for the Cup and got no benefit from it. They could have bubble wrapped him and kept him home and not helped out him or any other team wanting to sign him cheap.
That said, I hope he comes back and plays fine. Still adamant the Rangers didn't screw over Wade Redden.
There are no men like me, only me.
You're right, he was playing really well and deserved to be in the NHL. It wasn't any bit his own fault or what any other sports business would do.
That's like saying the high ranking stock broker made a huge mistake and hurt the company so the company fired him - but then saying that the company screwed him.

the rangers did ruin his career because if redden was even making 3 million per year he would have either been playing with the rangers over parts of the last 2 seasons or someone would have traded for him (someone traded for lombardi lol), the contract wasnt reddens fault he went for the money which the rangers provided and rangers from a business pov did nothing wrong in burying him in the minors but the last 2 years in the ahl killed his value and if wasnt for his cap hit he could have atleast been playing as a a #6 defenceman for you guys last year or atleast a #6/7 split but he still would have been in the nhl. as for the rangers bubble wrapping him i dont see how it would have been allowed because the PA would have petitioned that and its either rip the bandaid off now or in 4 months when the cap goes down 6ish million and he is still on the books.
