I think we will actually be in great shape provided we can make a couple of contract moves. After looking at the cap numbers (which is also available on rotoworld) here is what I think Mayhew will do:

    1. Release KVB; we will have a savings of 7,000,000 on the cap, but we will still have a cap hit of 3,686,250 even if we let him go.

    2. Trade Titus Young will give us a savings of 1,243,997

    3. Give Stafford a new 10 year contract valued at around 120 million. There will be signing bonus $ in there but keep the annual cap hit around 12,000,000 per season would save us 8,320,000 next season.

    4. Restructure Nate Burleson to a 2 year, 4 million deal. This would save us 2,500,000

These four moves alone would give us a cap savings of 19,063,997 and put our cap commitment to 105,545,611. We would then have 15,454,389 in cap space to go sign players this offseason.

That should be enough money to pick up 1-2 nice FA and resign some players as well.

Why would Stafford sign a 10 year deal?

No, it's just a question. I don't think he will want to or should sign a 10 year deal. A 4-5 year deal is probably what he would want. And that's if he wants to stay here long term.

As long as the money is there, he shouldn't have a problem doing it. The only way I see where he would have a problem with it would be if he believes he will be worth more to the team 5 years from now......but most contracts escalate in salary as the contract matures so that could be a moot point as well.

I am pretty confident that Stafford fully intends to retire a lion

Oh well if you're confident he intends to retire a lion, then I guess that about settles it.

    Scrap Detroit!!

    You don't think so?

We already know DET doesn't plan to let him go....Tom Lewand has already come out and said that more than once.

Usually when a "franchise" QB winds up with another team, it's because the club finds them expendable and has another QB waiting in the wings (i.e. Drew Brees/Phillip Rivers, Tom Brady/Drew Bledsoe, Peyton Manning/Andrew Luck, Joe Montana/Steve Young, Brett Favre/Aaron Rodgers, ect.)

IMO we would first, not want Stafford anymore and second, have another QB on the roster that we believe is better. I don't see either happening in the next 8-10 seasons but u never know I guess

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I think we will be worse next year, than we were this year. Maybe not record wise, but roster wise. I'm guessing we go 6-10??? But then we get to talk about our high draft choice again next year.

I had a chance to finish working through my approach to the cap....here is the rest:

    1. In the same trade with Titus Young, package Peterman with it (to the St. Louis Rams....see 2013 draft thread).

    2. Release Jeff Backus to save 2,750,000

    3. Restructure Raiola to a 2 year/5 million deal. This would save us 1,550,000.

These moves (plus the ones in my previous post) will give us a total savings of $25,891,997. This would put us 23,032,389 under the salary cap. Then we go and make these moves:

** Sign OLB Anthony Spencer (DAL) to a 5 year/28.5 million deal (8.5 signing bonus) this would be a 2013 cap hit of 5.7 million. (Lance Briggs got a 3 year extension worth 17.5M last season; this deal is comparable).

** Sign Louis Delmas to a 1 year 3.5 million deal (fully guaranteed). He won't see a large long-term deal.

** Sign Gosder Cherilus to a 5 year, 20 million deal (5 million signing bonus). 2013 cap hit would be 4 million. Slightly higher money than what Backus got last season (3.2M/season)

** Sign Deandre Levy to a 3 year, 7 million deal (1 million signing bonus). 2013 cap hit would be 2.33 million

This would total 15.53 million. This would give us around 8 million $$ to re-sign the following players:

    Lawerence Jackson
    Will Heller
    Sammie Lee Hill
    Corey Hilliard
    Don Muhlbach
    Corey Williams
    Kassim Osgood

    Everyone else can go
