The owners of the Boston Red Sox were preoccupied with sagging TV ratings and hired marketing consultants who urged the team to place a greater emphasis on "good-looking stars" and "sex symbols," according to an excerpt from a book co-authored by former Red Sox manager Terry Francona.

Francona described how he nearly walked out of a meeting he had in 2010 with majority owner John W. Henry, chairman Tom Werner and CEO Larry Lucchino after Werner complained about declining TV ratings on NESN, the team-owned regional network, and said, "We need to start winning in more exciting fashion."

Francona said he began to rise from his chair, but general manager Theo Epstein, also present at the meeting, grabbed his knee.

FWIW, Francona has also suggested that the excerpts sound worse out of context because the larger body of work is much more favorable to his time with the Sox than the sensational sections being thrown to the wolves.

Not the first time you've gone to bat for Luchhino and the the Stooges.

There is no rule that says a team can't make money and be built the correct way. Boston fans of all major sports in particular lose interest when the teams are not doing well, which just underlines the need to deal with both angles, not just Stepford Fans.

We have team rules and you have to be on time. He was fined for being late, he said he was stuck in traffic, and it’s just unacceptable.”

Luchhino interfered with Theo before he left the first time (that's why he left), and again after he came back. Carl ****ing Crawford would never be a guy that Theo or Bill James (brought in as a PR move after the deal by LL to say he thought it was a good move) - that was all on Luchhino.

They did? They got Duqe's team, and with Theo doing as much as he could do w/o LL getting in way did the actual work of setting up the two title teams, the owners did nothing outside of being owners.

People DO NOT RAG nearly enough on LL and the majority owners.

I agree with Bags. I've gotten to the point where I just want new owners because hopefully that would mean Lucchino is never seen again. I'd love to get a guy like Cuban, now there's a winner.

From purely a baseball fan's perspective, this will be a very interesting read. Couple that with Theo being in Chicago now, it makes it a little more meaningful.

I have to agree with bags, too. Guys like Crawford, for that price, don't seem very Theo or Bill James-esque. Theo preaches value and what Crawford got is way beyond the value he represents.

The worst part about signing Crawford was that we had to give the Rays our 1st in what was a very very deep draft. We could've drafted Guerrieri with that pick.

FYI they were SCOUTING CC for OVER 4 months both on and off the field before they signed him. So there was a tone of interest in him from the sox before the season even ended. and this was not just a "oh **** lets just do something big that we never looked into"
