Why do teams play prevent D when the other team only needs a FG to win?

I honestly cannot stand when teams do this. They are basically giving up 15-25 yards every play until the team is like on the 50. I know you play prevent to prevent the "big play" but why not just play straight up defense when the other team needs only a FG!! It's so stupid.

Sadly if you have a good quarterback I don't think you can stop it. I'm thinking about baseball season a little right now and spring training. Because with the way the NFL is whoever has the ball last in a close game is gonna win. Unless you have that rare defense like the current 49ers, Steelers of mid 2000s or Ravens of the early 2000s. But you could actually play defense in the early 2000s.

Because all the other coaches do it. It's basically so they don't have to answer to their employers. Losing games playing Prevent is just considered 'bad luck'. You don't want an owner or GM asking, "Why didn't you play Prevent?" do you? Even though its a lot less effective as a regular D, one loss in ten tries with a regular D looks worse, and is harder to explain, than the 5 in 10 losses with the Prevent. It's easier for a coach to keep his job losing with the Prevent, than winning with a football defense.
