Which individual award signifies 'best basketball player on the planet'?

In my mind it is the nba mvp award...

    The MVP award.
With the deepest of regrets I am announcing that I will be leaving Pro Sports Daily. No reason in particular but wanted to thank everyone for a great 6 years here. Lots of great discussion and good poll series as well. Also fun re-drafts. Best of luck to you all in the future.

Unfortunately the NBA does not have this specific award. It seems in other sports the MVP specifies the best player. But not in the NBA. You just have to look at a variety of different accolades and achievements an individual player has. Usually it gets fairly easy to pin point the absolute best player in the game. This season its a bit more difficult.

I wish they'd have a "player of the year" award.

    Stern, get it done!

MVP award is close... It's just 85% accurate, not 100%

Steve Nash was never the best basketball player on the planet

Could be any combo of things. PPG, PER, WS/PER 48 minutes, MVP

i don't think other sports have best player awards either. really the NFL and MLB are the same, it usually goes to the best player on the best team, one of the best teams, or a playoff team. rarely mvps for incredible players on teams with losing records in any sport

probably will never happen. they don't wanna incourage ball hogging & trying to win the scoring title to try & get the award
