I have every expectation that Santiago will turn into a good pitcher and be the 5th starter, to me Quintana is glorified garbage and the end of the year really showed that. He pitched great early in the year and caught some great breaks, but he had some bad games after that, and I personally don't think he is capable of much more.
    No ideas for the moment.

    .

Quintana was a real gamer tho, the exact opposite of Liriano. If only you could transplant Quintana's brain into Liriano.

Liriano was complete garbage and a giant waste for the most part, that wasn't a good move on Kenny's part in hindsight.

Yeah but Santiago was terrible early in the season, then finished strong. Remember Quintana is only 23 (maybe 24 now), but is young and can continue to grow. But I do agree about Santiago being a good pitcher for the Sox this year.

    10 weeks until opening day...

De Aza, Keppinger, Dunn, Konerko, Rios, Viciedo, Ramirez, Flowers, Beckham
    Wise, Danks, A. Sanchez, Gimenez
    Sale, Peavy, Danks, Floyd, Quintana
Santiago, Veal, Lindstrom, Jones, Crain, Thornton, Reed

It's a team that everything has to go right to contend. There's just no depth beyond this 25-man roster.

I like our pitching and depth there, but that lineup worries me... Too many RH's and too many inconsistent players, not to mention, still a good amount of base cloggers.

As of right now, the Sox probably have a bottom five offense in baseball.

The offense just is going to disappoint this year. I like Keppinger but when he's your only "addition" via free agency/trades in the offseason and you also lose a left handed bat/leader like AJ, I can't see the offense performing any better than last year.

    The Wizards' missing piece.

So with Lindstrom on board, what would you bullpen look like? Mine at the moment I would like to see

    Closer- Addison Reed RH
    Set Up- Matt Thornton LH
    Set Up- Jesse Crain RH
    Set Up- Matt Lindstrom RH
    Middle Relief- Nate Jones RH
    Middle Relief- Donnie Veal LH
    Long Relief- Charlie Leesman LH

In AAA these guys are waiting
    Jhan Marinez RH
    Leyson Septimo LH
    Brian Omogrosso RH
    Deunte Heath RH
    Santos Rodriguez LH

That is a hard throwing bullpen. Everyone hits 96 consistently.

Leesman probably has a shot, along with David Purcey, but I'll give Santiago the edge for long relief/spot starting out of spring training. It's interesting Santiago is playing in the WBC-we'll see if that helps or hurts him. Could go either way.

I don't think the Sox would have stretched out Santiago last year into a starter just to put him back in the bullpen the next year. Even if it is as a long reliever. They don't get enough work. He is better suited fighting it out with Quintana for the 5th starter spot and the loser going to Charlotte and being depth along with Axelrod.

I noted Santiago was pitching in the WBC. He has dropped out.

I suspect that there will be some trading activity during spring training, they are not done just yet.
