BTW the 2nd base position may be even worst than catcher in baseball right now. There are just not that many good ones around, let alone stars at the position.

    Think about it is

Cano who is the only star right now there and guys like

Pedroia, Phillips, Zobrist, Hill and Kinsler

Uggla and Utley seem to be on the down side.

There is a couple of young guys, but nobody great.

Murphy was 17 in WAR and #9 in wOBA last year. Obviously his defense is why his WAR is that low, but offensively yeah you can say he is top 10 around baseball.

It's amazing the depth is so bad at the position that a below average defender and a guy with a 1.8 fWAR last year can crack the top 10.

The offense is there but it still amazes me Murphy can be a top 10 anything.

WAR relies too much on defense anyways. I find it hard to believe that Michael Bourn is more valuable than a Matt Holliday. Also a few years ago, Franklin Gutierrez was ranked one of the best players because of stellar defense.

Offensively, Murphy is a great addition, he'll obviously improve seeing that last year was his first full year at the position.

    But yeah. Susie.

Robinson Cano he is not, but, hey Mets fans, Daniel Murphy ain't that bad.

Well, at least according to the MLB Network. He was picked to be among the 10 best on the MLB Network's 'Top 10 Right Now: Second Basemen,' show aired Friday night.

The network determined its rankings using a statistical analysis.

While that leaves most of the Mets faithful shaking their heads, it isn't all that crazy if you look at all of Murphy's stats.

While he made 15 errors in 138 games at second and is 20th out of 22 qualified second baseman in fielding percentage (.974 for 2012), Murphy didn't look terrible at second toward the end of last season. He's starting to make routine plays at least.

And he is among the top 10 among second basemen in most offensive statistics: fourth in batting average (.291), ninth in OBP (.332), slugging (.903) and 10th in RBIs (65).

The Top 10 Right Now series continues each Friday with the top 10 at two new positions, leading up to the 'Top 100 Right Now' on Feb. 15.

Offensively, sure. But I probably wouldn't put him there all-around.

I wasn't unhappy with Murphy last year. I thought his defense was surprising and it might even get better. And he can hit. We could do a lot worse than Murph at second.
"Mr. Martin Tanner, Baritone, of Dayton, Ohio made his Town Hall debut last night. He came well prepared, but unfortunately his presentation was not up to contemporary professional standards. His voice lacks the range of tonal color necessary to make it consistently interesting. Full time consideration of another endeavor might be in order."

So... what do you make of it stuna? You talk a lot about replacing him. Yet we don't have a single outfielder that could crack the top 30.

They have Murphy ranked 4th in OPS+ the last 2 years 800 minimum PA. T

hey have him 2nd in batting average(.302) the last 2 years only behind Cano, 1000 PA.

Harold Reynolds completely disagrees mostly because of his defense there.

If Murphy gets better defensively the offensive numbers are there.

But to me it just speaks to the lack of major league depth that Murph is a top 10 second baseman.
