Suns in trade talks for Rudy Gay (UPDATE: Deal losing steam - post 34)

The Memphis Grizzlies and Phoenix Suns are engaged in trade talks centered on forward Rudy Gay, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Rudy Gay is averaging 17.8 points and 5.8 rebounds this season. (USA Today Sports)The Grizzlies have been shopping Gay to multiple teams, and found an interested trade partner with the Suns, sources said.

There's no framework of a possible deal in place, but the Grizzlies have expressed a strong desire that any package involving Gay include Suns forward Jared Dudley and future first-round draft picks, sources said.

In an effort to avoid paying luxury tax in the short term, as well as get off the $17.8 million and $19.3 million owed Gay in the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons, new Memphis management has aggressively shopped Gay. The Grizzlies have made proposals on Gay to several teams, front-office sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Gay will make $16.4 million this year.

The Suns have been mindful of their financial state under Phoenix owner Robert Sarver, and there are still doubts within the organization they will ultimately be able to absorb the remainder of Gay's contract.

The Suns own the Los Angeles Lakers' first round picks in 2013 and 2015.

Under new ownership and management, the Memphis front office is dubious these Grizzlies are constructed to contend for the Western Conference title, sources said. Owner Robert Para has turned basketball operations over to CEO Jason Levien.

Memphis is 22-10 and presently holding the fourth seed in the West.

As long as we aren't trading this years first I could swallow a deal like this. I'd really hate to lose Dudley though.
Given that Babby doesn't want to absorb the whole deal, I wonder if we could swindle them into taking a contract like Frye or something.

Even Mr ORNG isn't thrilled about this idea. I posted the link on his Facebook page and he responded with 'No Comment'.

Well, the one thing I did say before is, our D isn't that bad. We need a closer to win games. Gay might actually help us a whole hell of a lot if we swing him.
Just praying we don't deal our own first this season.

Another thought on this. The Suns were looking at a new franchise player. We tried getting Gordon and were going to pursue Harden.

If we got Gordon, we'd be paying him 4 years (including this season) @ 13.5 (about that) mil per
Gay, at this time, is 3 years (including this season) @ 16.5.

So if this deal happened, we wouldn't be restricted, despite the long contract. This is taking advantage of our cap space. Realistically, teams like the Cavs and Bobcats should be trying to do something like this.

I'd prefer a rebuild but if this goes down, as long as we aren't trading this years first, I can tolerate it.

If by some miracle we were able to get the C's interested in that deal I wouldn't mind giving up our pick and keeping LA's.

    Dragic/Marshall
    Bradley/Tucker
    Gay/Wes/Beas
    Scola/Kieff
    O'neal/Fab

    Give Oden a call. .

Also, as MDM said, we should then try and go get Love when he's a free agent. We'll need to work out our financial situation (trading Gortat for young players/picks) to get that space but Love/Gay/Dragic is pretty good.

I don't think they'll want to take back Lee. It's clear they are trying to cut salary so I dunno who else they'll want to take back.

And I've been all about getting Oden too. That should be a no brainer for our brass.

If CLE get's involved their best asset is Varejao who would get no min in MEM. CHA would probably have to give up MKG but I really don't know what their roster is like.

Even the Lakers picks are looking pretty good right now. I have seen first hand Rudy Gay light us up, and would love him on our team. But that is a lot of cash to dish out.

If gives us a go to guy, but were does it leave us for the future? I need to hear more details.

question is, is there somebody in the 4-7 range(our projected draft pick) in the draft that would have a bigger impact than Gay? if not, having Rudy is not gonna be so bad of an idea.

and assuming (i hope!) that we keep our own pick, the team can then find someone who can complement Rudy's play

remember that Memphis is aggressively shopping him so i'm praying that our FO does not give in too much in terms of who they are giving up

Probably but if we offer Gortat to Bos they probably offer us Melo, Lee and a pick. The question is would you take that deal or say "Bradley or nothing"?

Charlotte would give up Henderson mostly likely amongst other things. Kemba and MKG, IMO, are untouchable.

Take Bradley (To replace Dudley) and pray we can get Oden.
