Not one person in this thread is excited.

To me, everyone seems more if we do get him and if we don't.

This I do agree with Ry.

I just try to accept that its 1) a poor market and 2) we are working to get under 189.

    Don't forget Nate Schierholtz =)

Hairston essentially in a nutshell is a lefty killer.

His defense is adequate but he is hardly a considerable acquisition for either team and there's certainly more than a possibility he peaked last season.

He would be your new Andruw Jones with better average essentially..

It is a lousy offseason. Doesn't mean we're all going nuts over this guy. He's Andruw Jones part 2, maybe a hair better. This is probably the most boring offseason in MLB history.

Last season, in 377 official bat-bats, he hit 20 home runs. Mind you he played in Citifield.

He'd be perfect against lefties, and an excellent 4th outfielder.

But we all know Ichiro will sell more Jerseys and merchandise. It's a good business move by the Yankees.

And we go back to the question, is this offseason about fielding the best team, or making the owners the most money?

The Ichiro signing did a little bit of both in my opinion.

I'm not a fan of the 2nd year but for this year, I am fine with it for sure.

The Ichiro signing made us a better team because he legthens out the lineup and gives us an established leadoff hitter.

It also increases the money this team will bring in through jersey and other item sales.

The argument can be made that the Yankees put over the hill name brand band aids on their problems.

I agree with this, but it is not like those names do not resurrect their career in pinstripes. I've seen it happen a lot.

I am officially hoping he chooses the Mets. He stinks.

Classic one good year on a crap team player.

He's the Fred Garcia of the OF. Meaning wtf is he on the Yankees for?

I rarely agree with RY but yes, this signing is not sexy at all.

I'm curious how much money do you think sales of Ichiro-related merchandise would be added to the coffers? If the Yankees receive a net of $50 per jersey and they sell 2000 Yankee Ichiro jerseys, that's $100,000. Is that amount even relevant other than paying the salaries for their minor league trainers?
"The 90 wins is about challenge. It's about changing the conversation. It's about framing questions for ourselves as to how we get there. So I stand by the notion that we need to get better, and in doing so we need to set concrete goals for ourselves so that we have sort of specific conversations among ourselves about how we're going to get there." -- Mr. Alderson

Itchy brings in all sorts of revenue besides jerseys, such as advertising from Japan, selling TV feeds to Japan and ticket sales from Japanese Americans, which I would bet is in the multi millions per year.

He pays for himself by Opening Day.
