Yea doesnt work that way. Ultimately its up the teams themselves to if they let him or any player play (99.99% sure of this). Though unless said player is hurt or recovering then they will likely keep him back but if clearly healthy then if that player wants to go then the team will let him.
Actually...they do.
I haven't seen it but you can bet your *** the Reds put a page or 2 of things Votto can't do….or his contact is voided.
For a pitcher...I think it's reasonable to put a clause in there that says they can't hold knifes or cut/chop things.
Even Dickey put his small 7M NYM contract (at least getting paid) in danger a few years ago when he climbed a mountain. He hadn’t cracked his first mill yet but decided to risk it. That was dumb…at least get a few million in the bank for your family before you decide to find your inner soul.
With Lawrie and his crazy personality…his first contract will be full of stuff like that.
For the WBC…everyone’s fine with him playing? It’s been 20 years since we had a home grown 3rd basemen. When the player is outside the Jays control anything can happen. Whitt who’s may be pissed at the Jays could tell him use his speed and go for doubles or Walker could give him the green light to steal against the Cubans (who don’t mess around). You just don’t know what coaching he’ll be given and could be advice the Jays coaches/management wouldn’t give him to keep him healthy.
If he's hurt we can put EE back at 3rd...that should work out ok.![]()
Hey! It'S JoeyBatS
I assume not many players have no WBC clauses in their contracts if any
Obviously, if a player is coming off an injury then its probably better for the team and the player himself not to join but if nothing is wrong, i doubt any team is going to stop a player from joining
especially a guy like Lawrie who is set to become the face of Canadian baseball if he lives up to the hype

The WBC has its benefits too.
WBC helps players get into mid season form by start of the season by facing some good pitching. I remember Vernon Wells crediting the WBC for his good start to the 2006 season. He was a notoriously slow starter.
I can't believe some of the reactions on this thread.... If a guy can't play a few games without getting hurt, how the heck is he supposed to stay healthy over a 162 game regular season?
It is only an extra 6-8 games or something like that, and it's not like it is shortening their off season. If they aren't in the WBC they are going to be in spring training, and by that time they would be playing games to get in shape for the season. I say let the boys play, and the more guys we have in it the better.

Im going to spring training from the 9-16th seeing them play the yankees. Looks like I wont be seeing a lot of the stars while im down there. Shoud go to the WBC instead.
Just realized our 1-4 in our lineup would be Dominican.
Reyes
Cabrera
Bautista
Encarnasion
Could possibly be the Dominican teams top four too. Few question marks though. Don't know if the Jays will let Bautista play and don't know if the Dominican team wants Cabrera with the steroid issue
I don't see why they would care, they want to win. No way we are gonna let Bautista go, too risky for the team.
