If I remember correctly, fans were thrilled with Ugoh at first as he was taken just before Tarik Glenn's unexpected retirement. Clearly, either the Colts scouting department was very bad at spotting good O-linemen or Polian overruled the scouts' selection and he was terrible in evaluating O-lineman.

It has nothing to do with evaluating Ugoh or what he projected to be. Ugoh had all the potential in the world and injuries and bad luck ruined that potential. The problem people have with Ugoh is the desperation Polian showed to move up in the draft to get him. Polian traded a first round pick to get Ugoh when he most likely would have been available later in the second round and would have cost substantially less to get.

^Yup...Polian went against his motto of drafting the best player on his board to move up and take Ugoh out of desperation.....and gave up way too much to do so. We had been fine with his crazy reaches in the past because they panned out....but the Ugoh draft was the beginning of the end for Polian that had us lacking depth almost every year after that...and us blowing up an entire roster after Polian was forced to keep role players for way over their value since no one was in place to replace them.

I do wonder about Polian's scouting department or if he had a metal meltdown though...seems like between the 06 and 07 drafts something happened and never really got right. 06 was one of the best Colt drafts I can think of top to bottom giving us guys that ended up starting at S (Bethea), CB (Jennings), LB (Keiaho), OL (Charlie Johnson), RB (Addai), and KR (Rushing)....07 produced virtually nothing of value 3 years later...even if Gonzo had had a nice career, the top billing players would have been a career slot WR, followed a LB that started 3 years, and an undrafted backup safety....there was also a "gaming addict" in Pitcock.

Looking at the first 4 picks we have made, the message I'm getting is that the Colts really intend on running the ball better (O-Line), and become more consistent stopping the run (Bjorn, Hughes).

^^ Most def. That's been the emphasis and I'm glad there investing into those type of players.

The wildcard here is FB Stanley Havili. He struggles in lead blocking situations, needs to get better at that. Which is a MUST in a power run scheme. Though he is one of the most athletic and offensive sound FB's in the NFL. When considering his pass catching and carrying skills. I see him as a sneaky weapon for us all year. I guess we'd prob line up Dwayne Allen in the back field for the obvious run downs. Unless Havili has improved in that area.

It was either Grigson or Pagano that said rounds 3-5 were going to be the "meat" of their draft....they weren't kidding.
